Title: third clutch cable in 4 years
Post by: ToniJ1960 on June 11, 2011, 11:42:26 PM
Well today my clutch cabvle broke again, third one in four years. Are they just not making them well anymore or could it be a reough opening in the firewall destroying that rubber piece? They always wear right there that part that stops them from going through. Last time I bought a Pioneeerr, for $70 I think if theyre going to keep breaking Im gettting the $36 one. Im wondering if I can pull it put a little and clamp it with a hose clamp for now.

Has anyone ever resorted to that before?

Has anyone replaced one and can tell me how to do it  myself? Mainly how its attached at the front,do I have to get on the floor or can it be attached from outside? One person or two person job?

There are these firewall adjusters for Mustangs, not sure if hte inside diameter is the same as a Pinto cable, but I would think it would work okay:

I had the same issue but mine went through the firewall three times in ONE year, so I pulled a Mustang II's firewall adjustment tube and now I use a Mustang II cable (same design, just attaches to the clutch pedal differently, and requires the firewall hole to be enlarged, as well as the cable to be held to the pedal with a bolt through the cable eyelet and the pedal eyelet. It makes the pedal wobble some and is really difficult to attach.

If I knew about the mustang firewall adjusters I would have tried one out and seen if it worked better.

Here is a link to what the engine side of my firewall looks like now:

????? I've owned 16 Pintos since 72, and have yet to lose a clutch cable. Look somewhere else.

I never had one break from 1986 until 2004 or 2005,on the same car then now three trimes. The guy who came to look at putting one in said it needs a grommet he could see where there was one before,so he says. It could explain why theyre breaking, but it seems like if the grommet is rubber like he says it will be,it would just tear up the same  way the rubber part of the cable going through the firewall does.

Anyone know if there was some kind of a grommet there? He could be just leading me in circles to not just come out and say he doesnt want to do the job too.

I have never seen a rubber gromet involved with the clutch cable hole. Even if there was one, I wouldn't see how it would keep the cable from pulling through the firewall, since the part that keeps it in, in the first place, is all metal.

Well I got my new clutch cabvle today I waited to order one online because I just wondered if they might be better than the autozone or oreillys junk ones.
Dave I think it was you who said you had one that was metal instead of rubber and it came apart too, could you look at these photos and say if its the same or not as the one I just got?

It is hard to tell right now (viewing on my phone), but the metal retention ring construction appears the same. Mine were breaking at the inside end of the metal bracket/ring where the pedal ball end is.

Mine had four small metal tabs bent inwards to keep the rubber cable sleeve from pulling past the bracket/ring. Those four tabs kept breaking off letting the cable pull past the bracket/ring and inside the car. I think it was just due to crappy design.
