Title: I was a drunken fool that night...
Post by: pumpford on May 27, 2011, 12:25:30 PM
Hello, I came on here and berated the innocent in a drunken stooper. I apologize. I have been trying to figure out which rear axle shaft I need, which is a daunting task considering I am NOT a mechanic, or someone who has the knowledge to work on my car whatsoever.

In that I became anxious to find the answer to my problem, other than that my problem is I don't know what I am talking about other than the fact I have a 1978 Pinto rear end in my car. Whether it came from a wagon, coupe or whatever other Pinto formats were available I don't know. I have the receipt from when the gentleman who built the car back in the late 80s bought it - no indication of anything other than 1978 Pinto rear end.

Anyway, to say the least it's frustrating to be at the mercy of my ignorance, and through that ignorance I lashed out at the people on this forum in a drunken rage. In the shame of my ignorance and my lack of automative savvy I apologize for my behavior.

I know that at least one person I was trying to obtain the right part from on eBay must have read that tirade because when I approached him to purchase a 1978 Pinto rear axle he tood the part off the site and did not answer my message I sent. I guess I just screwed myself for being anxious, ignorant and frustrated. I spent a lot of money on my car and I just want to repair this flaw in it.

Thanks for reading this. I really don't feel any better. I just needed to say it.

I can only speak for me but it is good that you did appologize for the brief indescression. I have checked over the other posts & I see people did ask you the needed questions but they were never answered, thus making it impossible to answer your questions. once you find out that information regarding the axle put what you found out & I am sure someone would be glad to answer the questions. The Pinto had quite a few different gear ratios & axles so without the requested information it is impossible to answer the question about the axle shaft.

Hang in there, & try not to get too pissed off at people on here. We are all eager to help others that have questions regarding the cars & we can do that on this site.

Stepping down from my soap box now. Take care & enjoy the car!

Do you know what size rear you have?  8" or 6 3/4"?  6 3/4 will have a cover that is bolted on the back of the axle.  The 8" will not have the rear cover but it will have a removable center section.  If you have a 6 3/4 I still have a drivers side axle from a 79 I had.  I am located in Portland Oregon though.

I am in Idaho and have two 6 3/4" axles. One is my 78's original and the other is my 73's original which I don't mind parting out.

I also have a spare set of axle shafts and a differential carrier in storage all boxed up. Splines and bearings on the axle shafts are good, differential carrier is good to. If you are still wanting some I can give them to my brother to get a shipping estimate to you. PM me if you are interested.

I have to ask though, what's going on with your current axle shafts?

Hey pumpford,
Don't feel too bad about your self-proclaimed ignorance... I'm probably the least mechanical person on this site.  Much of the mechanical stuff spoken about here goes right over my head!  What I DO understand however, is that this is a great group of Pinto-lovers who will bend over backwards to help a fellow Pinto-lover.  It takes a big person to apologize and I admire you for doing that.  I can't speak for the entire group, but so far as I'm concerned, all is forgiven.  I'll bet the others will feel the same way and you'll soon find the answers you're looking for!  Good luck!
Dwayne
