throw this out to the board or Fred.. on the driver side inner fender of my 74 wagon is a small metal box with a red rubber covered button. has a 3 wire connector going in the bottom.. almost looks like if you close hood it would push the button down.. what is it?.. i can get a pic if needed..roy ..

It overrides the starter interlock system. In 1974 only, the seatbelts had to be fastened in order to start the car.... pushing the red button acted as a "reset" whenever the system malfunctioned.

Roy I have 3 74'S out there and they all have the reset switch. 2 Wagons and 1 Hatch. Fred :)

It IS kind of strange, Roy. I'm assuming that's the reason they only did that on the one model year! I bought my '74 new and only put about 17,000 miles on it over a period of about 26 months and I know I had to lift the hood and press that reset button probably a dozen or more times while I had it! Not exactly a trouble-free system!

it is an unusual idea.... mine may be disconencted or wired around cause ive never had to push it... will the mootor still crank and not start or does it not turn over at all when it needs reset.. thanks. roy
Hmmm... now you're really taxing my memory. I traded that car off 35 years ago! If I recall correctly, it does not crank. I say that with about 90% confidence - lol.
