Title: 71 pinto lower ball joints
Post by: Wayne Kocian on May 13, 2011, 07:24:19 PM
Hi, I'm trying to find a part # for lower ball joints for my '71. I have found the number for '74 and up and no one seems to know if they are the same or not. Can someone please help me?
Wayne.

The Ford number I come up with for the lower is D1FZ-3050-A
That number is supposed to be available at :
Green Sales Company, OH  and Miller Obsolete Parts in Binghamton,NY

If you decide to go with either one of them- PLEASE!!!! verify that number to be correct for your vehicle - PLEASE !!!
I don't claim to be a parts expert & NOS/obsolete parts aren't cheap.

I've never recieved an email reply from GSC so you might just want to call them to start with.

The above Ford # is correct. The Moog # is K8163. I have a couple sets of each, but they are not cheap as they are hard to find. JT :)

Whoops, my bad...sorry about that...it tells me that when I need lower ball joints, I will have the same problem!! And they sound really expensive!! What are we going to do about replacement parts for our Pintos?

They make uppers? But not lowers???  weird....

The reason I'm asking is I want to install tubular control arms and they list them for '74 and newer. I have been doing my research to find out what the difference is between the early and late models.  The upper bj's are the same but arm length I don't know. As for the lower I thought perhaps the ball joint stud may be different. If it's a matter of replacing the knuckle to make the later stuff work that wont be so bad since they are easy to find. Has any one ever encountered this?  Wayne.

Other than the ball joints, the bolt hole spacing on the upper control arms is different between the 71-73 and the 74 and up control arms.  I also believe the lower control arm bushings are shorter in length.

A couple of years ago, I took some rough measurements of 71-72 and 79 suspension parts.  Almost nothing interchanges.

Pintojoe stated that the 74  lower ball joint can be modified to fit a 73 (and I assume 71-72 also).
