Title: Ruby Runs Badly!
Post by: blupinto on April 23, 2011, 10:22:03 AM
I was fortunate enough to find another throttle solenoid, but it wasn't from a Pinto. The car starts like usual, idles roughly at first but gets better in a couple minutes. The problems come up when I'm in first and second gear... I was unable to upshift from 2nd. Ruby sputters, loses about all power, and backfires... sometimes very loudly! This all happened after I went on that dirt road near my house and I found the throttle solenoid she was born with had the wires separated. The "new" solenoid was tested and put in place near the carburetor... but it hasn't been adjusted. Does this sound like a logical reason for Ruby's problem, or am I really off track? The spark plugs and wires are new, but not the distributor, rotor, and points.  Thank you.

Ok I think I'm back in the running again... After adjusting the throttle solenoid, curb idle, and the other idle screws... and much trial and error... SHE RUNS GREAT AGAIN!!! No more backfires, no more losing power... I'm just hoping my last trials with her are conclusive. If not, I have my tool box... ;)

On another good note, Ruby helped me jumpstart Green Meanie after a year's staycation in the driveway. Alas, she won't go into 1st or 2nd without that horrible grinding gear noise (yep the clutch pedal was on the floor), otherwise she would've gone for a lil' spin in the neighborhood to get the kinks out of her.  ;)

HAHA... Yes... On the surface she would be a sapphire, but true ugliness will be hiding under the shiny paint.

HAHA... That's the same test I put Harold II through. Good luck with your test. How far is your job?
