Title: Help with replacement 5200 carburetor
Post by: Carl Gideon on April 09, 2011, 03:16:15 PM
Hello, everyone.  I am so glad to have found this forum.

I have recently purchased a partially completed Gazelle kit car.  We don't have much detail on the original donor car, but believe it to be a 78 or 79 Pinto.  It is a 2.3L inline 4.

We have been able to start it, but it was running very lean and the carburetor seemed to have problems, and I found a replacement carb for it.  However, the replacement has two additional items on it that the original did not.  One is the bowl vent assembly, which I can deal with.  However, there is another opening right next to fuel filter that I can not determine what it is used for.  I have attached a picture with the item circled in red.  I have a Chilton's manual, AllDataDIY and a 1979 Ford service manual, all of which show it but make no reference to what it does. I can not find what it is for or what it hooks up to in any of them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There used to be a post about this exact thing.

Starsky and Hutch (a local member) answered the question. It is for an altitude compensator. He said it would be used on cars in such areas as the Rocky Mountains and high elevation regions. It must change the fuel air mixture to compensate or something.

Here is a picture Starsky posted from a shop manual, which I saved.

Thank you very much!!  That is what I needed to know to be able to track down what to do with it.

Thank you both. Not too long ago I posted a thread asking about a bunch of things on my carb and intake area of things I did not know. The bowl air vent assembly was one of them! The high altitude assembly was the other. Thank you guys!

Did you hook up the bowl vent solenoid?  I think it is supposed to be energized while the engine is running.
