Title: brake line... junk
Post by: Jippah on March 13, 2011, 01:49:35 AM
so i replaced the rear passenger brake line that runs along the rear diff and once done, i noticed where the line bolts up to the "T" on the rear diff, there is a hose that attaches right to the top of the joining box type thing...

any ideas where the hose goes? because mines been severed... i know its not the brake hose that allows the rear diff to travel and keep pressure in the lines.

but this hose kinda.... goes up lol

i'll post pics if needed... sorry i couldnt be more specific

It is the differential case vent. It should run up and towards the center of the car (not dead center, off to the driver's side). There should be a small hole that is (if I remember correctly) 1/2" diameter. The hose goes in there but does not connect to anything. I always make sure there is at least four to five inches of hose inside the hole to ensure it doesn't fall out. The hole should be tight enough to keep it in place though.

No special hose is necessary. I just use hose the same size as my fuel line hose which I think is 3/8" or 7/16".

On later model 6.75" axles the hose is connected to the driver side axle tube. The bolt, for the rear BRAKE HOSE fitting, is hollow and has a nipple on the top of it. The hose connects to that nipple.

On early model 6.75" axles the hose connects to a nipple on the rear right of the pumpkin above the differential cover (when looking at the axle from the rear).

I have a Mustang II 8" which I am planning to put in my 78 sometime this year, and I believe the vent nipple is in the same location as early 6.75" axles, above the cover on the pumpkin.

I have a 78 Sedan which I put a 73' 6.75" axle on. I had to get a longer section of hose for the differential case vent because the hose attaches to the pumpkin instead of the axle tube like the original axle was.

I have no idea how wide spread the mud Wasp is, but the darn things have caused a pile of problems with vent hoses here in Canada.

They kill a bug, then stuff it down something like a vent hose with an egg. Place a mud plug, then another bug etc, etc, etc.

This completely plugs the vent and seals can blow out.

I haven't seen this on Fords for some years. But I still keep an eye out for this problem.
When I find an open type vent, I install a breather on it.

I've used 125 psi air hose and it will not blow the plugs out.

Just a tip I've learned over the years....

Good point Reeves1!

My 73 station wagon had mud wasp nests scattered all over the undercarriage and in the door jams, in the fenders, etc. They were really hard to remove to. At first look they appear to be mini termite nests.

How much can you get these breathers for?
