Title: Removing rear pop out windows
Post by: Late Models Best on April 04, 2005, 04:24:09 PM
I'm parting out a 1980 sedan and need to know how to remove the hinge off the post of the rear pop out windows without damaging them.    Any help is appreciated. If anyone is interested in 1980 sedan parts I have 2 of them . One with blue intereior and one with red intereior. Or any other parts.

I will tell you, but if they are tinted windows, I have "dibs".

The plastic is VERY brittle!!!!!!! Do all this with CARE, and at yor own risk. This is how I did it. They have two hinges on each window. The grey plastic that you see, as well as a plastic pin inside. Open the window, remove the weather strip(should come out very easy) look at the plastic clips, you will see that the hinges have a top part, a bottom and 2 "sides". The front and back sides are "seperate" tabs, so it looks like four small parts sticking out of the hole. The front and back parts are tabs on the clips, they need to be CAREFULLY pressed towards the center of the hinge(not in, just to each other. towards the tab on the frame) very carefully to release the clips. At the same time, lightly pull out on the window. Do one, then the other. Works better with two people. Take your time. If the car is going to the bone yard after any good parts are removed, I would suggest making some "doors" in the door frame to gain access to the back side of the hinges. Keep in mind that the hinge/frame needs to be removed from the car before the window frame can come off the hinge(if you cut an access hole, you can't just pop the plastic pins out and slide out the glass frame). Those hinges/pins, if you can find them, can cost like 10 bucks per assy.

Take a look, if you want, send me a pm if you want, or just ask here for more details.

The first car I removed these from, it went very easy, did not brake one. That was for a race car, and I junked the glass :'( with the good clips :-[. Our new pinto had a busted rear glass :-\, and both clips snapped >:( removing the frame to install the new one. I was able to find the glass, as well as the new hinges. ;D

Hope this helps. BTW: How do the visors look? Good pins? And about the interior light......  Let me know

Hey 77 Turbo Pinto,
I attepted to get the hinges out without breaking them but they were so fragile as soon as you pushed on the upper tabs they broke off.  I got the frames out of the slot but the hinges are no good.  Where ddid you say I could find 4 of them?    Any help appreciated.

I did not tell you to push on the tops, those are not the clip part. Anyway, sorry to hear it did not work out. Yes, those things get very brittle. Any good Ford dealer should be able to hook you up with a list of dealers that have nos parts like those. Why would you need those if you are parting it out?

Maybe he's putting them in another car or selling the glass to someone.

I know that on my '74 wagon, the clips were so brittle that they broke the moment I touched them. My '72, ironically, had more resilient clips and I didn't have any problem taking them out and putting them back in when I painted the car.

I paid more for the pins then the hinges when I got my new ones. The pins tend to be more durable, but if you have to destroy the assy., you will need new ones.
