I have seen a bunch of 2.3 turbo Pintos. I see a few wild v8 pintos as well. But a lot of people argue that the V8 is too heavy and too far forward to make it a nice riding daily driver. So, why then do I not see any V6 4.0 SOHC Turbo Pintos? Reading different sites, makes it sound like a stronger engine then the 2.3. Also, sounds like it makes it almost as good on ther MPG'S. They are old enough to find them in the bone yards too. Also, can be found in the bigger brother, the stangs here and there. So why do I not see any of the 4.0 SOHC Turbos being used then? Thnks.
I dunno about that being stronger then a 2.3 the bottoms ends are about the same but all the ones i been around like to have head gasket issues.
Plus the reason their are so man 2.3s and not other turboed motors is because a 2.3 is a DIRECT bolt in. If i get bored with my 2.3 ill be dropping in a LS1 and turbo it.
Unless i some how become rich between now and then then it'll get a Nelson racing 427/428 smallblock twin turbo DD series motor. Those push 1500HP and still pull 18-19 MPG which will be scary since i don't believe in strip only and it'll still be a street car!
4.0L S.O.H.C. engines are bad news many chain failures and the like
my 2cents worth

Hmm, I have not heard of the head gasket issue before? Nw for the chain issues, I had heard of that in the earlier years(mid to late 90's) but that then they went to gear driven. Wich supposedly resolved that issue. But, there are so few cases that I have found where people used these motors in other applications. So..... who knows. I know the 2.3 is readily available and much to be learned on them! Also forums dedicated to just those!
Ummm...I work for FoMoCo and the 4.0 sohc never went to gear drive, the guides and cassettes got better.....biggest issue I see right off is the rear sump oil pan. A member years ago tried to put one in and make a new pan but I think he gave up because of the cost involved.
Um. I swore I read that on wikipedia. Went back to re-read it. I guess I was wrong on that! Jeeze, must be I tried to enter too much stuff to this old memory board! LOL. It was the 2.8 version that had the gear drive. Dern! LOL. Thanks for the feedback with the rear sump issue. I did not find anything under the search for it on the home page. Would love to find that thread!
Yea the older 2.8 had plastic timing gears that would strip and fall to pieces and drop into the pan. The replacements were metal.
Been a while since the post about the 4.0 swap, but the pan and pump/pickup tube were a real roadblock.
I did find one thing today about how the oil pan was set up on those and did compair that to what the oil pan is on the motor out in the barn. So I could see the issue there! If one had a mig and new how to use it, not sure if one could weld up a new pan. But then again, what mods would that bring for the sump pump? Again, would be a nice different idea! But in the end as I said on the turbo site, probably will end up with a 2.3t set up. Although, if my van does not sell, I have one very terrific BBC 350 out there that has been well maintained and mostly highway use. The tranny is a rebuilt with about 30,000 on it! LOL. But then I would not be able to settle the wife down because my big reason for getting the pinto was because it would get much better gas mileage then the van! LOL. I would probably never hear then end of that one! Although, the idea of a nice blower set up robustly portruding from the small hood would be something tantilizing to these eyeballs! LOL I know, its a guy thing right? I am sure the 2.3 T will be the end swap anyways! If I cant find much on the 4.0 Turbo, there must be a reason! Actually, many of the turbo guys did not even know there was a turbo set up for the 4.0. I had found where there was a special explorer and the stangs they were offered in. I also found two places that offer aftermarket turbos for them! But again, if theres not much there for knowledge on them, perhaps there is a reall good reason for it? Thanks.
