Title: Boss 429 Pinto
Post by: cfb289 on February 27, 2011, 09:31:39 PM
My pinto has been done for a few years, so its now time to tear it apart and build a new engine.  Rather than find my old build post from 4 years ago, I'll just start a new thread.  Here is a few cylinder head pictures to start off with.

Now will the new engine fit.

Lets see, the steering hits the oil filter adapter.  A double u-joint fixes the steering, and lets lower the steering column 2" for better header clearance.

Now I'll move the master cylinders outboard about 3" to fix that problem.

Craig-- You make an old man proud of the way you do it yourself.
Its a pleasure to see some good old CRAFTSMANSHIP!!
All that & a Boss 9, what more could a man want.

Good luck & keep up the good work.  Sincerely   Dick Mathias

Looks amazing! Loving the aluminum! I hope that when I drop the 289 or 302 into my 78 that I can do it this well and beautifully!

Wow ! Very nice ! Would love to see that run at the track !

Looks like a yellow Cougar in the shop as well ? Any story on it ? Pictures ?

One last question.....what is the color code/name for the blue on the Pinto ?

Thanks everyone.

Reeves: You have a good eye, that is indeed a cougar in the background.  It belongs to a friend of mine.  We have been helping each other with building cars and engines for as long as I can remember.  I'll post a few pictures of it in a bit.  For your second question.  The paint on my Pinto is 2006 Mustang Vista Blue Metallic.

Dave:  Just to clarify, I didn't make the throttle body in the last picture.  It was bought from Wilson Manifolds.  Good luck on your 78.  Just do the best you can, and be happy that you did it yourself.

Here is a better picture of the roughed in front motor plate.  I'm very lucky to have access to a mill and lathe to be able to make cool pieces like this.

As I said the yellow 67 cougar belongs to a friend.  Currently it has a blown 427 wedge in it.  Hopefully it will be done this spring.  His future plans are to replace the wedge engine with a SOHC.

Time for an update.  I made a die to form header tubes to the flanges. And have the driver side header all tacked together.

It has been over a month, so it is time for another update.  Headers are now finished.  Just need to send them out to be coated.  The engine block has been deburred, line honed, square decked, and getting ready to be bored.  Here are the pictures.

how about a shot of the motor / car from a short distance, say, about 10' or so. motor/front end/driverside?

excellent build.

Reeves:  In an ideal world it would be done already, but it isn't.  I'm hoping to have it running by July 1.  We'll see.

Srt:  Here are some pictures from last year when I had the 408W in it.

Srt:  I just looked and I don't have any pictures of the Boss 9 from farther away.  I don't have the mock up engine in the car any longer.  I do have pictures of something else interesting.  Once I knew that I had to move the steering and master cylinders I wanted to make sure that I moved them far enough that a 427 SOHC would fit.  So I raided my friends stockpile of SOHC parts and spent an after noon mocking that up also.

Almost done.  The engine is back in the car, and runs.  I took the car out for a drive Sunday.  Biggest thing left to do is fab an air cleaner / air box that actually fits under the hood.

Headers came out great and I really dig the coil mount locations. Must be a deep dish piston, where is the pin on the piston? Those chambers look mighty small for 8 pounds and up. Do you have anymore pics? Looked like a motor mount with a press fit delrin or poly resin isolator.
