Title: Wagon Tailgate weather seal
Post by: DaleFortune on February 27, 2011, 07:34:29 PM
Would the rubber seal for the tailgate be the same on all Pinto Wagons up to and thru 1980?

From what I know, yes!

I am actually using a fellow club member's solution for my tailgate gasket on my 73 Station Wagon.

Find an early model two door ford escort with good door seals and take them. They are the exact same length as the Pinto tailgate! While not the same design as the Pinto seal, it does work and seals up VERY nicely! Much cheaper than buying a new gasket if you are not in any hurry to make the car 100% ford restored!

Like Dave1987 said the escort will work fine, however another alternative (If you cant find good escort seals) is a late model Ranger Pickup.  They are almost the same design as the pinto, but about 6 inches too long, just trim to fit.  I did that to my '80 wagon a few years ago and it sealed perfectly.  Good luck

Hello Farmboy.
I used a door seal from a 1999 ranger. If you have trouble finding one in a wrecking yard, look one up in J. C. Whitney they sell them for about $18.00 the last time  I checked.  The Ranger body shell was new for 1998 (I had one) and they are still the same.  When you put it in, start at the bottom center where the factory cut is and go around from there. when you get back to the other end you will need to cut off a couple of inches. It will look original.  Good luck...............................John

I found a wrecked 98 Ford Ranger on craigslist that the owner was parting out , I bought both door weatherstrips for $10, and John was right on , fit the rear hatch on my wagon just great. Thanks for the idea , a lot cheaper then the $40 on Ebay!

Going to get mine today, there's a 1990 and a 2000 ranger at the local junkyard. Be nice to have a good seal back there

Worked out great, but was about 3 in. to short but no biggie, trimmed off a piece of the old one.

This is a great idea,  Thanks
