Can anyone tell me what a code " W ' on my data plate is for a transmission on a 1973?

According to a Ford 73 car shop manual, the W stands for a C4 automatic.

Thanks. It is an automatic. Not sure it is a c-4. Any easy way to tell the difference between a c-3 and a c-4?

Yea in 40 year cars, parts do get swapped around.  The C4 has 11 pan bolts while the C3 has 13.  This link has some more details.
