I have a newer tank in the car (77 pinto wagon) that is a few years old. The filler kneck on it has only the three screws on it. The old tank the guy kept and gave me because the sending unit still worked in it. Its filler kneck also has only the three screws on it. Now, what I find wierd is that the kneck is not attached to the car body like you would find on any newer car. But just sits loose where the hole is in the body. First, is this typical. Or should there be metal there that the filler tube gets attached to? Second, what was the real difference between these and the replacements from the recal? Was it tighter fitting? Longer. Different gasket at the tank? What? Also, since this is the 77, is there a source for getting the recal plastic piece for infront of the tank. Or would any flap of rubber mounted in front of it work or what have you? I am personally not really concerned over the whole ordeal since the wagon bodies were much safer. But..... heaven forbid if the wife becomes wise to the flaming jokes of the car, I would like to put her concern at rest. Thank you.
Recalled tanks are the same, filler neck seal is the same as well.
The recall kit came with the plastic shield for the front of the tank, a longer filler neck, and torx-bit screws to secure it to the body. If you have phillips head screws that hold the tube to the quarter panel then you probably don't have the recall tube installed, unless the previous owner changed it out themselves and didn't use the torx-bit screws.
The tube isn't held up with anything once it's in. It is pressed through the tank seal and then screwed to the outside of the quarter panel. Visibility of the tube is normal if you are looking inside the fender. It also will be encased in ice if you drive in snow for an hour lol.
As far as I know, they never recalled the wagons...ANY YEAR for the gas tank/filler tube.

Hmmm, must be another one of those secretly hidden spots where the rust has taken over. As I said, the filler tube is not attached to the body. There is nothing body wise within the hole :0
Well, indeed, the one on the car has three philips head screws on it. The other one has three torq screws on it. Outside of the tank, I can not tell any difference! Someone sent me a photo of the side of a pinto where the fill tube goes. Clearly this has been rusted out on mine. So I have another behind the scenes to try to find a donor piece to and weld in. Of course by then I will have to graduate from a 75 amp arc to either a mig or acetelyn. Thanks.
Talk to fred morgan on this site, He should have that part of a wagon for you.
I will. I am in talks with him on another item or two. Waiting for final reply on someone else. Gotta keep things cheap right now since I am still out of work. But hopefully that will change? I know I will need a section there then sooner or later!
