Title: 72 pinto gas tank filler tube seal
Post by: oldeguy on February 01, 2011, 08:27:48 PM
Need a new seal on the gas tank filler tube to tank. My local ford dealer says the part number records only goes back to 1980. But they do have a listing for an 1980 pinto tank seal. it's P/N is E1AZ.9072B...does anyone know if this 1980 part is the same as the 72 tank?

they cost $14 each, and they come in a 2 pack...whats up with that?

According to an old 65 to 72 Ford parts list, the 71/72 part number is C7A2 9072-A.  According to an old 73 to 79 Ford parts list, the 73/79 part number is E1AZ 9072-A.  Ford keeps superseding parts numbers which would not show up on these old lists.  Measured 72 and 79 tank openings: 72 - 2.55" ID & 0.28" thick lip, 79 - 2.51" ID & 0.34" thick lip.  I suspect they can be interchanged but do not know for sure.  Here is another source:

On my tanks, the lip rolls to the outside of the tank.  The 0.28"/0.34" was measured from inside of the tank to the top of the lip farthest from the tank.  The lip was about 1/8" wide.  I tried a 72 gasket in the 79 tank and it seemed to fit fine.

You may want to check out SSC enterprises. They show them in their Pinto parts section.

LOL. I guess i'm lazy and cheap! I took the old one to Ace hardware and to the plumbing section. I found a rubber toilet to tank donut (gasket) that was about an inch or so thick. It was about $2. The inside fit perfect around the filler tube, nice and snug. On the outside it was just a little bigger than the hole in the tank so i cut a slice about 3/16" in the gasket that went all around it. I put silicone on it and put the donut in the tank hole and the slice all the way around it held it there. After some vasoline on the donut, i worked the filler tube into the donut and down into the tank. It was almost like they were made for this. Kenny

i sure hope that water gasket is made from a material that can resist gasoline long term...or we may have the flaming pintos again!

Just an FYI...purchased p/n e1az9072b gasket from ford. This P/N according to Ford is for a 1980 pinto. It fit my 1972 tank just find.
