Title: 74 pinto wagon - 85 turbo coupe problems
Post by: carbomb on January 31, 2011, 04:41:58 PM
i recently put a 85 tc engine in my 74 pinto. we didn't do any modifications to it just cleaned it up put a new oil pump on it and put it in. It is not running correctly. it idles fine but when i give it the gas it just chokes and makes bad noises. we thought our ignition was weak and fixed that and it is still doing it. it doesn't build any boost just levels out at 0 vacume 0 boost. what could of we hooked up incorrectly or what could be causing our problems. Low fuel pressure possibly? a sensor messed up?

just plug the wiring to it and take the 2 vaccum hoses and connect them together.... the ecu only sees the device and wont set a code if you do this... it will also bring boost up a couple pounds more doing this...

hook the ones on the engine together ? or the ones on the bps? and plug the other ones. I have been told this but i'm not sure exactly how to do it.

the 2 hoses that go to the boost control selenoid..... unplug those hoses from the selenoid and connect them together.... thats it..... leave the electrical connection to the boost control plugged in.....lower left of diagram

how safe is this to do? how many pounds of boost? i heard the stock head gaskets don't like over 18 but i know a guy who has ran 22 for 70000 miles by doing something like this

i know when ya just hook the lines up with a IHI turbo it runs around 10 psi of boost id say at most it would be around 12 and if ya want more just get a manual boost controller to replace the factory one with leave the stock one in place though so it doesnt show a code.

i have an extremely built motor in my pinto... i use a standard felpro 8993 headgasket.... ive seen 30+ psi,(accidentally) and i run the crap out of this car... my stockblock first engine was near 400hp... all mods were the head intake exhaust and fuel system....dont be scared to use the stock headgasket.... they work great..
