Here are a couple of pics of my buddy Tom's Pinto
the engine is a 351w and it has a C6 tranny. Best time so far is 11.7 in the Quarter mile
here are some pics i took of Tom's '71 The headers are shorty Mustang aftermarket and they are fliped around so the collector faces the FRONT. This is a cheap alternative to the very expensive Pinto headers. It is a 351w

That is a NICE nice Pinto!!!!
LOVE the header idea, what size of exhaust pipe did he use?
What all mods are done to the engine?
Also, I noticed the 5 bolt pattern on the wheels.. is that a 9"???
Exhaust is 2 1/2 Tom's engine and my engine are basically the same, he has a solid lifter cam .576 .576 i think, but my heads are better than his. The rear is an eight inch with a spooled 4:11 the fronts are still 4 lug. His best time with the old engine was 11.7 we will be going down to the strip to see how we do very soon.
Now that's a good idea. Any other pics of the pipes? I may want to steal that idea. How well do they work in comparison with stock manifolds? (sorry for dumb questions, I'm still a noob at this).
Was any steering linkage needed to be adjusted or modified?
Or maybe the cross member?
these are aftermarket header, 1 5/8 primaries, these outflow stock exhaust manifolds by a large margin. The frame rail needed to be trimmed a bit on the passenger side, but can be reinforced with a plate on the backside of it. As far as i could tell no other mods were needed, but i'll find out for sure and take some more pictures. His car has had the inner fenders cut out, but thats not because of the headers.
THat's a really neat idea, HE was using his noodle on that one lol
actually.....i came up with the idea! ;D He is not working right now and needed a cheap fix. I was going to do that type of thing when i was going to twin turbo my 351 so i could put the turbos in the fenderwells behind the headlights.
Looking forward to more pics.
Twin turbo 351 in a Pinto?! :o
The biggest hurdle I see is that it sits lower than the oil pan. If I were going to install them on a lowered car, I would fear that they would hit first. For a drag setup like that car, it is a great alternative to expensive headers.
Hi, If my 76 don't sell by spring I'll be giving this great idea a try! ;D I built my 351 pinto with just 66 mustang manifolds and camed it for a low 4500-4800 rpm which was great on the street but ran out of air at the end of 1/4 mile.Very consistent running et in drive though. And bulletproof! ;)
