Title: Pintos as first cars....
Post by: Nwstal on January 13, 2011, 09:10:34 PM
As Im starting to tear apart the Pinto and my son wants to know what Im doing, I told him were gonna make it a fast car like the last car I had.  Long story short he proceeds to tell me he loves this car and doesn't wanna see it get wrecked cuz he wants to drive it when he gets older...  So this really got me to thinking my daughter is almost 9 he's 5 and my youngest is 1 I can build this car to be their first car with their help.  Make them the "You graduate with a 3.0gpa Ill buy you a ______ Car and if you don't your on ur own cuz the pinto is ur brothers now"  Sounds like a good idea to me.  I also think everyone should start with a Carbeurator so a stock rebuild, roll cage, and gas tank shield it would be a perfect first car eh?

Wow man, great story...

It is so nice to hear about young kids having the same response to the Pinto that I once had myself. It made me think back to 1984 when I was leaning over the fender of my parent's 77 Pinto wagon.  Of course the only difference between myself at that age & your son is I wanted the family Pinto before Pintos were ever thought of anything but everyday transportation. And yet when we went to car shows I would talk about how I was going to restore a Pinto & take it to car shows. It's amazing how far these cars have come since then.

As long as it's rebuilt to be reliable, I see no reason why it shouldn't make fine first car.  My first car was a new '74 Pinto Runabout which I acquired 37 years ago this month!  It served me well and I never regretted that decision.

Awesome! I remember my parents bought new Mustangs every few years, they got divorced when i was 5.  Money then got tight for both sides and both parents ended up in Pintos. I now have two Pinto's and two sons.  They seem to have an appreciation for the car as well, some day they might both get one (over my dead body), but there are worse things to give or leave you kids than a Pinto. Just so long as we can find parts to keep them in top shape.  Putt Putt my man!

Geez - my first car was a Pinto and I still drive it to work!  Good little car - fun, too.
After teaching 3 crazy teens how to drive a stick, I am surprised that the clutch has lasted 155K miles and counting!

My first car was a '71 powder blue Pinto!!!  I remember I stuck a Rolling Stones tongue sticker in the back window.  That car was cute.  I drove it to death.....like I'm doing to the one I have now!!!!  :embarassed:

Pinto's as first cars are a great idea, I lived to tell about it! Dwayne, I bought a '74 trunk model new in August of 1974. Crazy, huh? My first car was a '71 Sedan, red with Cragar SS's, remember those? I learned to work on cars with my Pinto's, that is why I drove 4 of them over the next 15 years. If you drove them that long, you certainly learned to swap starters, water pumps, brakes, timing belts in 20 minutes, rotor-to-plug tune ups that really made it run better!

And now in the 21st century, 40 years later, I think it is awesome to have your kids help you with a Pinto project, best of luck to you.
