Title: ? 78 302 oil pan
Post by: lateniteauto on January 04, 2011, 05:22:45 AM
Could anyone tell me if this oil pan (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MOR-20502/SuggestedParts/?prefilter=1 (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MOR-20502/SuggestedParts/?prefilter=1) ) will fit a 302 swapped in a 2.3L 78 sedan?  I really think this would be a good one, but would like to get some feedback from someone in the know, before I spend this much money.  Any advice, knowledge, or other part numbers would be very helpful. Thank you.

You can actually find the Mustang II pan once in a while on here or on Ebay. I sold one last year for about $125 and it was in like new condition. There are several discussions on here about V8 swaps. I have a 1979 w/289 and a C4. You can email direct if you need some info on the swap. rsm2006@msn.com

Yeah, email RSM, he'll fix you right up. If you're wrong about something, or he doesn't like what you've said, he'll let you know. He'll even tell you about the access hole cover in the driver's fender if you are interested.

I had a pan built from a blank core...6 years ago it cost me 165.00. http://www.fordpinto.com/your-project/302-into-77-wagon-oil-pan-modification/msg9637/#msg9637 I documented my entire conversion here on fordpinto but at the time I did not know to make one continuous thread and in the beginning of the project had numerous threads. I would be happy to speak to you on the phone to explain my experience.

Get the milodon pan. Its expensive and you may see it hanging down depending on your front end. Mine is just level with the crossmember after lowering the rack 1.5".
Dont forget the pickup as well.
Also dont get the copies either. They are just stock pans with a sump. They dont have the baffling or the flat and square area that clears the rack.

71hot...   do you have a part# for the Milodon.  And could you explain what you mean by "the flat and square area"?  I'm not in a rush, just don't want have to return anything.  I am still in the middle of building my 302.

Yes this one. The first picture. The flat and square area im talking about is right here in the red circle. They are more expensive by far. But hey in some small way your supporting an american job and it fits.
There is one on ebay right now.

I wish it was mine to sell cause i need the money! LOL!  But it isnt. Just doing a little foot work for yah. Also this one comes with the pickup. A good deal IMO.

The the other one that im showing you is the stock pan modified without the flat area that just happens to clear the rack on the Milodon pan.
They may fit and work the same on the engine but it will cause the engine to sit higher in the chassis to clear.

Quick question for 71 hotrodpinto, whet does a person do to drop the rack down 1.5? I'm dropping a 351w in my 79 cw,Im hopping to lower it down and move it back a few. Needless to say I will need some type of oil pan, will more than likely have custom make one. Thanks 79prostreet.

Well im not sure about the 73 and up. The 71 has horizontal "pads" that the rack bolts to. I cut mine off and moved them down then re-welded them. AND to get the rag joint to clear again i had to cut and box up some clearance in the top part of the cross-member. Not a job for the timid fabricator. I Imagine i could've had some more clearance with just a after market u-joint, but i just didn't have the extra cash and i wanted to retain some shock absorption in the steering wheel.

The most important thing is to make sure its parallel with the cross member in both looking down on the cross member and in looking from the front. after your finished. THEN you need to install a "bump steer kit" basically making the tie rods parallel with the lower control arms again. Otherwise it will be all over the road

I had a 351 C in my 74 hatch back and only had to use a front sump pan to make everything come together. Did have to move one of the frame engine mounts back an inch or so. The headers is the only trick. Still have the new set of Hooker Pinto Ford small block conversion headers if you need some. The two rear Number 3&4,7&8 run straight out through wheel wells and collect below.
