Title: 79 wagon turbo swap
Post by: yogetthephone on December 27, 2010, 01:08:37 PM
I bought a 1979 ford pinto woody wagon last week for $450 it had the 2.3 carb engine in it which was blown and a c4 automatic trans. Bought the 2.3 turbo engine from a 83 thunderbird for 300. Rebuilt the engine with new head gasket oil pump water pump and switched out oil pan and pickup from donnor engine. I finally dropped the engine in last night. I had to remove the battery holder and the turbo exhaust exits ran into clearance issues with the wheel well just need to trip it a little. Now i need to run lines for a new transmission cooler, install new fuel pump, and connect all the wiring.

Engine is all wired up put new junkyard stereo in which sounds great. Today sadly i'm cutting the hood as the hood will not close I have to loose a little piece of the sleeper look I was hoping for by installing a GT mustang style hood scoop from summit. Then All that is left is to wire the fuel pump and connect the fuel lines. I am unsure of where to connect the fuel pumps electrical I know I want to find a connection that is powered only on ignition but if I connect it to the fuse box I am unsure if it will run low on power. I do not want the car to run lean as it is turbo charged as it can ruin the engine very quickly. Also I am unsure of whether I should run all steal fuel lines as the fuel system will be about 60 times higher pressure and might blow the rubber hose off and set my car poor pinto into flame. I will try posting some pictures of the new hood when I get a chance.

All steel lines would be best but you can buy special fuel injection hose and if you flare the line and double clamp you will be OK, 45 psi is all you need for fuel pressure.

base pressue is 39 psi and add another 15 psi at boost gives you 54 or so...... so 45 is a lil low...
