Title: Pinto Kawasaki project
Post by: rkk on December 26, 2010, 03:06:09 PM
Hi folks haven't been on the forum in a while, work and all that stuff.  But anyway thought I would share my latest project and also looking for some help and advice.  What I want to do is make a small trailer to hook behind my Pinto that would haul my latest restoration a 1975 Kawasaki 500 one of the first super bikes.  But I thought it would be cool to pull into a car show with the bike towed behind my Pinto of the same era.

My questions, does anyone know of a trailer hitch available for a Pinto. Looking also for a small trailer base I can use and modify that with some kind of fairing around the trailer then paint it Kaw lime green and Black to match the car and bike.  Any ideas would be welcome.  The car has a turbo motor in it so should have enough power to pull it. ???
Attached is some pictures of the car and bike.  see below

Not sure on where to get a hitch but like Home Depot has small trailers that the bike will fit on. Speaking of the bike...I haven't seen one of those in 20 years. Awesome restoration on the bike!! I like the AMC sittin in the garage as well...and the Pinto is nice too...lol

Won't that draw a crowd! It would be fun to sit back and watch the people draw near, I would have to eye the triple first since my first love is bikes. Oh what a sound those dyno tuned pipes make, had a 250 triple when I was younger, should have died on that thing!!  Went from it to 4 cyl kaw's and now I have a 79 & 82 CBX'S (6cyl's) Maybe one day I could pull my 79 CBX behind my prostreet 79 crusing wagon, got me think'n. All the best on your project, post pic's when you can.  79prostreet

There were trailer hitches manufactured for early model Pintos with the small bumpers (I have one for my '72) but I don't know whether they made them for the newer models with the bigger bumpers or not.  You might check eBay - probably as good a source as any.

I've been checking out the posted links and crawling under my car and I am beginning to think that there's not much to bolt a hitch to except for the front and the back of the rear bumper.

Although I'm toying with dropping a couple of angle irons off the two gas tank bolts, but those look a bit flimsy and the angles of the dangles may be too odd and severe.

When I moved my bumpers in I welded a plate across for strength.  So I already had something to bolt it too.  Turned out by luck the plate was in the right spot so the hitch came out right at the licesnse plate opening.  Worked out nice its hidden.  I just made a licsence plate braket that I can insert right in the reciever.  Working on my trailer now should have something to show real soon.

I at least pulled the tank before I welded mine (OK, not an option for everyone).

Frame work holds my fuel cell in the floor where the spare tire was.  Need to add a vertical upright to the Right side because it is allowing the body to flex as it is now and the back panel can be heard flexing (not good).  When not used, it hides behind the plate, when used, I put the plate on the carrier.

Well here is the trailer.  Check out the wheels on the trailer.  They are golfcart wheels ,I modified slightly but match the cragars on my car. :)  see the link
