My goal is at least 120hp with the following modifications: port & polish, shave .030 from head, .410 comp cam, electric fan, under drive pulley 1.75:1 to water pump, ranger round tooth timing set w/ adjustable cam gear, pertronix ignitor II ignition w/flame thrower III 45,000v coil, holley 350 CFM 2 barrel, oval port holley manifold and a 94' Ranger exhaust manifold modified w/ 2 1/2" flange. Does anyone think it will produce over 120hp?
The engine/trans will be pulled shortly after Christmas and I will begin the rebuild process with pictures along the way. I also plan on going back together with a T-5 and 3.80:1 limited slip gears (found that 3.55's are too high). I am searching for a bigger gas tank and plan on changing to an electric fuel pump. I have considered cutting out the spare tire area for added tank space. I will be lowering the car 2", rebuilding the entire front and rear end for better handling and modifying the steering setup. The interior is completely trashed so a full gut is required. The goal is a comfortable and reliable daily driver. I am open to suggestions and hearing what everyone thinks.
Nsublet, I assume you are talking about a 2.3 motor. Has the lower end been done or are you just putting this stuff on a lower end you know nothing about. I would not be increasing the compression if I did not know what the piston to wall clearence is, which I wouldn't have any more then 1.25 thou. You won't just be getting more horse but you be high rev and if there is a lucy goosy in there ....it will scatter. You said daily driver....A 410 cam is not daily...it is comp. To much cam for a daily driver...310. Porting is most important...do a good flow job with good matchup. Carb sounds good. Don't go to low on the rear end...it's a light car...My wagon weighs in at 2260 with a v8 and c4. Electric fans are nice but your fan doen't use that much horse....besides...what amp is your alt...you might be spending some dough at this stage that you don't have to.
Spare fuel tank. Once upon a time I built a killer steel tank insert for the spare tire compartment...i mean it fit right in...but I always felt uncomfortable about having that much gas right behind me....my tank rusted out cause of the salt and I had the facilities to weld up a nice 1/8 tank at work which I used for quite a few years before the salt got to the rest of the Pinto wagon. When I did the v8 I regretted tossing it....But, That is where my batts live now. I thought that if I ever did a cannon ball run or something where I needed a sustained fuel supply for 5,6,700 miles that I could whip up some pvc pipe pods that could be strapped into my luggage rack topside...then I could take them off if I want. I am not kidding. I would not recommend cutting your spare compartment out cause you will be ruining major structural integrtiy. I saw your post and this is what I think............................High_Horse

i would get water pump and clutch fan from 91 ranger
i would do big valves since u have the head off and a windage tray in the pan
i would skip the pertronix and use 75 -86 dura spark distributor and msd box
a 410 cam is streetable if u drive it like u stole it all the time (i do)
A .410 lift cam is not WILD, I've got a .420 lift blueracer cam in one of mine and it idles better and pulls more vacuum than a stocker. Its the duration figures you have to watch. The oval Hollley intake might be a bit large...a 1" spacer on a factory intake minus the 5200 adapter might serve you just as well. Before you spend on the pertronix parts, let me make you a deal on a Mallory Unilite. Brand new, simple hookup and great performance. AS far as the gear ratio, what are your plans for this car? I'm pulling 4.11s in my T-5 car. 1st is pretty short... but I rarely use 5th around town driving. My other car has 3.55s with a 4spd and will pull high gear at 40+ mph. Try what you have before making a change is where I'm thinking. JT
This talk about CAM shafts makes me wonder...
I have a blueracer cam that my brother bought for my car a long time ago, only used it for a year or so while the carburetor was buggy, then switched to a roller cam.
How can I find out what the lift is of the camshaft without any data sheets or casting numbers.
