Engine is dying. Would like to use something more modern with a 5 speed. Will a 2.3 use the existing motor mounts. What all would need to be done.
Gonna have to remove the motor mounts if you are going to change to a 2.3. its not a EZ job, there spot welded in and they do a really good job doing it

Having said that, its still the "easiest" swap of all the thoughts out there. the 2.3 is also longer by a bit so youll have to get creative.
Hopfully someone that has done it will chime in soon for ya.

Mark, I have a 94 Ranger engine with 5 speed in my 73. I used Ranger eng. mount's and frame mount's I fabricated. Fred :)
Ending result's. Fred ;D ;D ;D :P
You could try a fresher 2.0.
But that might be too straightforward and easy to be all that much fun.... ::)
Put a 1600 in it. Very easy.
I did this about 15 years ago. Put mounts out of a 74 in my 72 after removing the @#$! spot welds. I was able to use one of the original bolt holes at the top of the mount. Drilled the frame for the other top hole, then welded the bottom when I had the exhaust done. I'm running an electric fan because I ended up with about 1 1/2" between the pulley and radiator. I love 2.0s, but at that time(pre ebay for me) parts just weren't easily found. A 2.3 and T-5 is has way more bottom end as a plus. JT
Why not just build a good, hard running 2.0 with a turbo and use the T5 bell, flywheel and trans. It would be a kick butt combo and different. If I had to do another Pinto, I would definately use the 2.0. It even has a readily available twin cam head and is a bullet proof botom end.
The downside of a turbo on a 2.0 is the carburator vs. EFI on a 2.3, but it is very do-able. Turbo Toy, where are you finding the DOHC heads for the 2.0 and what kind of money?
Just for the record, stock vs. stock or mod for mod, the 2.0 will spank the 2.3 any day, but high-performance parts for the 40 year old 2.0 are getting harder to find. Esslinger and Racer Walsh no longer carry stuff for them.

I know nothing of the 2.0 really, how would the T5 fit onto it? Tell me more about the twin cam head.
I'd like to know more about this 2-cam head also. The only way I know of putting a T-5 behind a 2.0 EAO is cut/weld a 2.3 bell or not use the top bolt holes. JT
Here is a Twin Cam head from Lotus (still being produced $$$ Dave Bean) that fits a 2.0L. This one is on my 1.6L. There is also a 2.0 Cosworth Twin Cam and the Ztec (SVT) Twin Cam. The original Hanto Pinto (1974) was a 907 Lotus Twin Cam. I used a T-9 5 speed which is just a Pinto 4 speed with an extra 5th gear (came from a 2.3L Merkur). I adapted it to fit a 2.0L bell that was the original engine in my 71. The T-5 requires the trans tunnel to be cut forward 1.5 inches. The T-9 does not. However, the T-5 is stronger and a dime a dozen.

Hanto, truly an awesome and fairly easy swap!
However cost is truly and issue here. I mean $3500 just for the head? wow Your in V8 swap territory. then theres the fab work again.
Truly id get a nice 2.3 carbed setup and just stick with that.
Dont get me wrong i love the idea of a lil 4 banger with some more individuality but my guess is this gent wants to also do this fairly cheap as well.

Thanks 71hotrobpinto...was building this 1600 Cheap?...NO...is it different?...Definitely...Passing a V8 pinto in the first corner on the OUTSIDE...Priceless... :hypno:
All kidding aside, rebuilding the 2.0L with some go fast goodies (intake, carb(s), cam, headers), changing the rear gears, and adding a five speed trans may be the best bang for the buck, IMHO.
