the vent tube on top of the gas tank. Where should it go and what is it connected to? On mine, it is about 8" long and connected to nothing.
Getting gas smell and plugged the hose , but still smells. Help
It is supposed to vent out into the atmosphere. It does not connect to anything. You should unplug it as I do not think that is where you are getting the smell from. Maybe on the hottest summer day of the year and if you tank is full you may smell some gas vapor but I doubt it in the winter time. I would check for fuel leaks, the tank, lines, fuel filler neck, carb, fuel pump etc.
Thanks for the info. Traced all the lines etc with no luck. The street rod garage guy did the same and replaced one hose that was questionable. Still the odor is strongest near the vent.
It could be the O-ring seal on the tank itself. Its old and possibly leaking.
Another part to check is the rubber connecting tube from the filler pipe to the tank. They get old and brittle and they crack, and it could be letting gas fumes out.
one source of fuel vapors can be the charcoal canister in the engine compartment.
No charcoal canister in the engine compartment. What was it hooked to? That may be the source
of the smell.
What year is your car? I know that on 77 and up models (not sure of some of the earlier ones with 2.3s or 2.8s) have it located in the driver's side fender hanging off the outside of the engine compartment wall. It should be on it's own bracket. I know the 1.6 and 2.0s have it in the engine compartment.

A 75 2.3 L in a kit car. Apparently the builder trashed all of the emission stuff. where is the canister connection?
Is a canister available from a parts store? Have not been able tp find one.
I have for $15.00 + ship. Fred :)
The vent tube is supposed to run to the charcoal canister. To my knowlege, there should be one on all Pintos. As with most old cars people take them off. Everyone is forgetting to look in the fenders. My V6 has the air conditioner dryer in the passenger fender. I have seen other classic cars from the 60's and 70's that have the canister in the fender if there is not enough room under the hood. I owned a '68 Buick Skylark that had a canister (looked like a coffee can), so I am sure your Pinto should have one (from factory anyhow).
From what I know of the canisters, it's supposed to filter fumes from the gas tank and then recycle it back to the carburator.
in my experience with the 71 thru 73's it was in the engine compartment, passenger side on a bracket bolted to the frame rail
Roger, canister was shipped today at 1:00 pm my time thanks Fred :)
