Title: Difference in early spindles vs. late spindles?
Post by: ahawes on November 15, 2010, 07:22:06 PM
I've got a '71 that I'd love to get some 2" drop spindles onto but haven't got any later model spindles to compare mine with. I've noticed that some places say their spindles are good for 71-80 Pintos whereas other places say 74-80. Are they all the same or not?

Car has disc fronts if that matters in the slightest. Thanks in advance.

The 2 inch drop spindles won't work on the early suspension. I bought a pair for my 74 and when I redid the suspension in the 73 found that they were totally different. The brake caliper mounts are different and the drop spindles were about 3/4 inch higher (from ball joint mount to ball joint mount). There was no way to use them on the 73 unless I wanted to do a bunch of modification to the entire front end. The easiest way to lower the early Pinto is to cut the springs. I ended up cutting a turn and a 1/4 to get the 2 inch drop in the 73. It rides a little stiffer but sure looks good.  I am still going to use the 2 inch drop spindles on the 74 when I get into it, as I plan on putting a 302 in it and don't want to cut the springs.
