Hey Pinto Lovers,
I'm replacing the heater core in my 72, I am not exactly how sure to do this. I am sure it's and easy fix so don't laugh at me lol, I just don't want to crack or break anything in the process. I got under the dash where the plastic box is and there were these clips on the bottom of it *4 of them. And I got those off. But the box still wont budge and I need to get in there to replace it right? I usually would just jump into doing this but I don't want to hurt anything in the process of doing this.
Thanks in advance for any help I can get.

I provided r4pinto with these instructions back in 2008
http://www.fordpinto.com/general-help/how-to-change-the-heater-core-in-a-non-ac-1975/msg70157/#msg70157 (http://www.fordpinto.com/general-help/how-to-change-the-heater-core-in-a-non-ac-1975/msg70157/#msg70157)
heater core removal instructions
step 1 - drain the radiator
step 2 - disconnect battery and remove (more room to work)
step 3 - in the engine compartment disconnect the 2 hoses that come out of firewall (1 to the water pump and one to the carb going over the valve cover)
step 4 - remove the bolts for the heater blower motor (on the fire wall, close to battery) and disconnect any wires for the blower motor to firewall.
step 5 - remove the passenger seat (more room to work)
step 6 - remove the glove box door and glove box
step 7 - remove the fresh air vent pull on passenger side
step 8 - remove the passenger vent and duct from vent to heater core
step 9 - helpful to remove the under-dash coin tray and radio for more room to work/see (don't recall if this is "required")
step 10 - remove the heater control cables from the heater core, do not lose the "clamps" that hold the cables in place.
step 11 - remove the power wire for the blower motor.
step 12 - remove the duct work from the heater core assembly
step 13 - once everything is disconnected from the heater core assembly... I "think" there is 1 bolt that must be removed to pull the assembly out... to the right of the glove box and look up.
step 14 - remove the heater core assembly, hoses will come with... be sure to remove the clamps before you pull thru the fire wall.
step 15 - once the heater core is out... pull the hoses off and get new clamps and hose to reinstall
step 16 - To open the heater core assembly - have to remove all the clips that hold it together, be careful the assembly can be easy to break.
step 17 - pay carefull attention to how the heater core comes apart and all the little pieces/flaps. A camera comes in real handy - taking pics step by step.
Hope this helps, not a fast fix but easy if time and care is taken. I also like to use a digital camera during the disassemble process in case I forget where something goes when doing something for the first time... Have Fun ;)
This is a 72 removed. There is a total of 5 mount fastners to remove. Fred :)
One of Fords better ideas to put the hose clamps inside the firewall and behind the heater core box! no way to just replace the hoses with out taking the entire box out. Since i had to take mine out to replace the hoses a good cleaning and a new heater core was the ticket. Hopefully she'll last longer than me now!.
DJ - PM sent but not about this topic.
(not sure how one gets a PM on this site. A pop up lets you know ? )
