So my wife and I were driving home from running errands today, we took Brownie since she had more gas than the rest of the cars and it has space in the back for easy loading and unloading. Well while hitting up stores on our way home we noticed a bad vibration from something either in the engine compartment or the front of the transmission tunnel.
It's like the transmission is loose and vibrating against the transmission tunnel, or the motor is shaking around so much that it's knocking against the firewall. Not to sure.
The only thing I can describe the issue, in my previous experiences, is that it is similar to when a 4cyl Pinto motor diesels and shakes around a lot making a lot of racket.
It's not so bad when I floor the accelerator, but normal cruising, park or neutral, it rattles around like CRAZY!
Is it the motor mounts, transmission mount, issue with the motor, or something I'm overlooking? I couldn't see anything moving around a whole lot when we parked the car and I looked underneath. The motor, from under the hood, doesn't appear to be shaking that much.
It's more noticeable inside the car, sounds much louder from inside than when you get out and listen for it.
If it turns out to be the motor, how hard is it to swap the 2.0 out for the 2.3? I know the motor mounts are not the same and would require some fab work to make a 2.3 fit, but how about space wise, do I need to cut the firewall?
Sounds like mounts. My wagon does the same thing. I changed the engine mounts and it helped but I still need to change the tranny mount.
Could the torque converter bolts be loose?
I agree. My first Pinto (the blue one) had a loose mount (motor) and shook like crazy. Hopefully it's fixable in Brownie's case.
Oops... I was agreeing with RSM (no offense TIGGER). You slipped in there so fast... :amazed:
check the mounts and the converter. I think it could be either of those.
How about the exhaust pipe from the manifold inside the engine compartment?
Put a new engine in my Green 72 and had a bad rattling noise afterward, this was the issue... It was not aligned correctly.
Maybe?
Hmm, that's a good point I could have easily overlooked Scott! Thank you!
