Title: Auto Dimming Mirror In A Pinto?
Post by: dave1987 on October 27, 2010, 09:16:40 PM
How could I go about this? My idea is to get a good mirror from a 90's Lincoln Town Car with the auto dimming function and wire it up in my 78 Sedan, but, how do-able is this? The 90's Lincolns have the lighting/glare sensor unit as part of the mirror, is this all of the electronics I would need aside from connecting the mirror to a power source?

These types of mirrors are usually made by two companies - Gentex and Donnolly.  Wiring should be somewhat standard to each make.

The electronics in most of the late 90s to mid 2000s are all in the mirror.  at the minimum you would need switched 12V for the dimming function.  Constant 12V will be needed for the compass cal settings.  There may be other connections, like a reverse light input to disable the dimming in reverse, thermistor input if you have temperature display, etc....

I have a mirror from a 96 Caddy that may make its way to the Pinto, as I want a nicer one for my Olds convertible.
That caddy mirror has the compass in it, too, so i will not get lost on my routine way to work...  :rolleye:

Here is my thread on the Olds board that may give you even more info!

If you get a gentex mirror, I have a wiring pinout that might help ya.
