Title: Transmission Vibration Dampener....
Post by: dave1987 on October 21, 2010, 01:48:24 AM
I pulled one from the 73 wagon at the junk yard in hopes to put it on my Brownie's C4 for the sake of keeping it as original as possible.

Unfortunately the holes on it to mount it to the transmission are not in the same place, as the dampener came off a 4spd transmission, not an automatic like the C4 in Brownie.

My question is, if it will bolt onto my 78's Sedan, does anyone think it may help with vibration/noise when driving above 40 MPH?

Most Pintos don't have an issue with vibration noise or resonance while driving at 40 MPH, however I have a semi stock 2.3 with the stock 4spd, but my rear axle has been swapped out for a 73' 3.41 gear ratio rear end. So driving at 40 MPH, I cruise around in 4th gear and top out right there. I shift twice, up to third, when going through a light from a complete stop, and by the time I hit 40 MPH the motor is at 2000 RPM.

Yeah, I REALLY want to put a 5 speed in it, you have no idea how much, it'd really bring the 2.3 to life. Then I could put that blue racer cam I have back in the head (has a slightly higher lift than stock, don't know the exact specifications on it though). Unfortunately I don't have the $200 to pick up a trans from the junk yard right now. :( There are dozens of T5 80's mustangs out at Jalopy Jungle but they want so much for a transmission! :(

Not only would I have to get the trans, but I'd have to pay $45 for a drive shaft to.

Bill stated in my Project Brownie thread that he has run Pintos with and without the vibration dampener and didn't notice a difference, but I'm curious about whether or not it would make a difference with my 78's drive train.

I couldn't really say on that. I'm just getting back into Pinto's after not having any for prolly 15 or more years. My wifes 79 wagon has a damper on it but I still have a ton of vibration. I replaced the engine mounts and will be doing the tranny next week. As far as a T5....buyer beware. I did a T5 swap on her 88 Mustang...what a pain in the butt that was. The tranny I was getting wound up being junk. I bought a replacement which was ok but still needed rebuilding. We have a guy localy who rebuilds them at a cost of $350 to start with which isnt bad as long as they dont need any major parts. I also found out that those trannys use transmission fluid and not gear oil. That will screw one of those up...lol. Her wagon has a C4 and I'm thinking AOD one of these days after I get all the other issues taken care of. Good luck on ur swap. If there is any way you can get a tranny out of a running car that you can drive is the way to go. Otherwise it's a crap shoot. How much they asking for T5's at the salvage yard??

Transmission from my regular yard is $200 flat (including taxes) for any trans from any car. Same price for an axle. What cars can I pull an AOD from?

I couldn't say exactly what the best car is to get the AOD out of. I'm sure there is someone on here who could answer that better than me.
