Title: I picked this up last week
Post by: TIGGER on October 12, 2010, 01:30:44 AM
I picked this car up on Wednesday.  The original owner was a little old lady from Oakland CA.  She passed away and her granddaughter inherited the car a couple years back and brought the car to Oregon.  She drove the car till it died and had a shade tree mechanic try and fix it.  He did not have much luck getting it running again so she decided to sell.  I tried to buy it off her back in March but we could not agree on a price.  And I could never get a straight answer on what happend to why the engine died so I was hesitant in offering more for the car.  Someone ended up offering more and bought the car.  Fast forward 7 months and it is for sale again.  The car was supposed to be a father/son project that never happened.  The son did not show much interest in it so the dad decided to sell.  I bought it for what I offered the girl and took it home.  The dad never did a thing to it other than park it in his garage. The next day I had it running after fixing a fuel leak and resetting the timing belt.  Aparently the timing belt broke but the guy working on the car did not set the distributor gear properly so it would not fire.  The car has 71K original miles on it.  I have the majority of the maintainence records on it along with the original sales paperwork.  The only thing I see missing is the window sticker.  The car is a 2.3L auto, power steering, power brake, California Emission car.  I have never worked on a California Emission Pinto before.  It has a lot of extra "stuff" that I have never seen before.  There is an O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold.  How it is controlled is a mystery to me. The interior needs some work and the front brakes need to be redone as the passenger side is touchy.  The body is fairly straight with just a dent in the drivers quarter.  The car seems to run real good as is so all I am going to do is to replace the leaking valve cover gasket.  I gave it a wash today and it shined up real nice.  Here are some pictures......

Awesome! Another 77/78! :D I'm very fond of my 78...:)

It looks beautiful from the outside! New carpet and a dash cap will make it beautiful inside to though! Seat covers are easy, but the headliner is going to be a tough one. I can't find one for my sedan anywhere at least.

Thanks guys, I am heading to the wrecking yards tomorrow to pick up some odds and ends that it needs.  Today me and a friend of mine took a look at the brakes.  We also replace the valve cover gasket and did an oil change.  Tonight I ordered the headliner, hopefully the weather holds out till I can get it in.

Blu, the color is kind of growing on me.  I had a 79 Bobcat a few years back that was the same color but the paint was not as nice.  I did not like it much then but I like it on this car.

Before I got Wildfire I didn't know Pintos ever came in that color. After getting her and giving her her first bath (at my house) I totally fell in love with Saddle Bronze Metallic. Sadly Wildfire's paint is crackled all to hell. The color definitely glows though. Good for you!

That is a nice car and where did you find a headliner?

I bought it off Ebay, here is the link http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380139458400&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380139458400&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT)  It came in a few days.  The color was a perfect match too however it was not sewn exactly like the original, not that it really matters I guess...  It is much nicer now without it dropping on my head.  It also came with material to cover the visors for no extra cost.

I installed it last week.  It was a little cold out, therefore it was a little hard to stretch it around the side windows.  I used a hair dryer to heat up the vinyl.  It is not perfect but it came out pretty good.  I ordered a carpet for it last weekend.  I should have it early next week....

So I have been working on this car as weather permits.  We had a couple nice days here in oregon so here are some current pics.  It is not perfect but it looks a heck of a lot better.  I installed the headliner last week and the carpet yesterday.  I am not done as I still need to install the door sills and cargo panels properly.  Before I do that I am going to replace the side window gaskets as the original ones are hard and have shrunk therefore they leak a little.  Along with the headliner and carpet, I replaced the instrument cluster, turn signal switch, steering wheel, visor pins.  Me and my neighbor spent a couple days tracking down water leaks before installing the carpet.  It looks like we got them all for now.  The side windows should be the last of them.  There are still a few things to finish but it is almost done.

Thanks guys the car is nice but I am selling it.  The neighbor girl across the street is in love with it and she is looking for her first car. I just wanted to make sure this one got saved and went back on the road.

Make way for the pink Hello Kitty seat covers, steering wheel cover & matching trash bag.

She has had the car for a couple weeks now and has not done anything to it but drive it.  Infact she is hardly ever home now.  It is nice to see it being driving on a regular basis.
