Title: power stearing pump
Post by: phils toys on October 11, 2010, 10:57:02 PM
I reasently blew the hose on my power stearing high pressure line.  after changing it  it now leaks out of the pump  only when sitting . has any one ever rebuilt their pump.  it is on a 76 but 74-77 have the same rtesavor and earler ones have the same pump. i can buy a rebuild kit for about $15, a new pump for $35 or pump and resavore for $45. oh and fred is out of them at this time.
i did find an earler one from a 70 mustang and played with it  just as an experiment it seames easy enough  but i am not sure about that one sence it had no fluid in it and was pretty rusty
just looking for in put to help with the decision making process.

I would just replace the pump and put your old reservoir on it

I'd just buy a rebuilt pump with the resevoir. Why hassle with something that may only leak again. I have to replace the one on my Pinto. The front seal is leaking but I'm not messing with it.

I did a pump swap on my grandpa's 73 Econoline about 15 years ago.  The pump on the Econoline was bad and I had one from a passenger car but the reservoir housing was different so I bought a seal kit to swap housings.  While I was at it I replaced the front seal.  The hardest part was to remove the pulley.  I had to buy the tool to remove it.  I sold the van two years ago and never had a problem with it leaking.

I would probably get the pump and put your old reservoir and pulley on it.  It is fairly simple to do as long as it is in good shape.

on the one i picked up used it was all my brother and i could do to get the pully off with the propper pully removal tool  as it was rusted so bad.
i can get the front seal for under$5 but you have to tear the pump apart to put it in. on the  experimental one it is just seals that get replaced. i guess the next step will be removing the old one and making sure it is not the resavor leaking.
