Title: SUBFRAME CONNECTORS
Post by: vonkysmeed on October 11, 2010, 02:37:20 PM
Getting ready for a busy winter and need to know a recommended size of tubing to use for subframe connectors.  I will most likely try to also incorporate my 6 point roll bar since I think it is providing most of the rigidity for the car right now.  I believe it is 2 inches wide, but want to know if it is overkill to go with 2 Inch tall as well.

Any pictures would also be appreciated.  I have seen a few, but do not remember where.

after posting, I continued to dig about the connectors and found a few useful links

after a few quick looks, did not see too much on size of tubing to use, but I will keep looking.

This person used Mustang II weld in connectors from Competition Engineering (near end of album).  CE's web site no longer lists these C3041 connectors.

Thanks,

When I do mine, I will also document for everyone to see.

Right now it looks like I will be using 2" square tubing with 1/8" wall unless I can find channel made up cheaply similar to the other one.

found someone who actually makes one for the Pinto, but looks to be from the frame all the way back.  Not sure where it goes, but not a bad idea to keep in mind.

Those look like they might be connectors for the subframe kits they have. I bought a pair for a Mustang II hoping they would fit but they don't. If I remember correctly they would attach ok in the front 1/2 but the rear 1/2 wouldnt. I think was just a matter of cutting some of the material away and welding it in. I have the car in storage right now but if I get a chance I'll check and see exactly what had to be done to use the Mustang II connectors.

Thanks for that link.
However, if you look closely, you will see that it isn't for the subrame connectors, but to actually add a rear subframe to the Pinto that connects to the front subframe. And in the options there is a part number for 71-80 Pinto's. Yay!
But that is something I would like to do to mine to add a lot of strength to the rear end. Would make it a full frame. Might not be much harder than adding the home made subframes I was planning on. Then again, anything I do turns into a fiasco. :-(

I sent a question through their website asking about specific instructions for installing these. I will let you guys know what they respond with.

Russ

I did see that, Also sent several questions with no answers yet.  Also looking at my car, the rear subframe is almost non existant because it is a 73.  Was planning on beefing it up and may take their system and modify from there.

Bad news. I got a reply from them. They don't sell that any more. The person said they had a universal kit, and suggested calling them to discuss plans for the car.
I don't like universal kits.
Oh,well. Back to plan a.

I'm going to attempt to do the ones that I sketched in a previous link after the snow falls down.

got a message back saying that he no longer made the kit for the pinto, but did make a generic kit that may fit.
