Title: Removing steering column key tumblers?
Post by: popbumper on October 09, 2010, 04:55:10 PM
Hi all:

Sure this has been covered before, but I do not recall how this is done. I am in mid "column restoration", needing to restore/repaint the various parts of the column that are "dash color", and would very much like to pull the tumblers and replace them with a fresh set/new key. It is not obvious how this is accomplished - IIRC, there's supposed to be a hole / pin somewhere where you push in a paper clip or some such thing to release them?

  Thanks for the help.

Chris

Hey Fred:

Thanks, thought so. With the tumblers in place, there's a pin in there. I tried to press it in but it won't depress. Does the key need to be in the tumbler to press the pin in? Hmmm...

The pin will be able to move in with the Key in the Ignition and turned to the ACC position

youll have to punch the Ignition out if you dont have a key, IE break the lock cylinder with a Screwdriver, messy but works.
