Title: Ford 999 reports
Post by: 78squirewagon on October 04, 2010, 08:37:47 PM
I just got the 999 report on my hatchback and found out that my wagon was not built on the same day as the hatch was. The wagon was built on Friday Febuary 10th while the hatch was built on Tuesday Febuary 14th. Oh well, I was hoping that since the VIN's are only 62 apart, they were built the same day. But I can say I have a Valenitnes Day car and one that was built on a Friday (which would explain a few things about my wagon LOL!!!)
Either way who else can say they have cars that were built that close together in the Pinto world

Squire,

when you say they are only 62 apart was the lower sequence built first? is the 2nd digit the same (plant?) the vins get assigned long before the car is ever constructed. they process the car as a year, assembly plant, body and engine code. if these where the only determining factors it would be easy to figure out the build dates and they would be sequential. also the process kind of seems backwards as you would think the would build sheet an order, run it down the line and stamp out a vin at the end that described what was made. nope... vin first.  other companies take it farther matching build sequence on the motor and trans.   ala a matching numbers camaro.    fords are a little easier to keep a correct car.  as long as the motor is as described on the vin and is of the appropriate year and produced prior to the cars production date it is technically "correct"

options throw a wrench in things.  once they assign a built sheet to the vin it is queued up to roll down the line. if you ordered the mags which where back ordered from the foundry due to demand  and your vin is XX10 and the xx65 buggy has steel wheels which where on the shelf its gettin built first. same goes for almost every item that isn't generic between all models

cool info on your cars though

They were both built at the NJ plant, same color and engine. Just different body style (one an automatic squire wagon while the other a 4 speed hatch)  But it's still pretty cool having two that close together ;D
