I lost the only set of keys to my 78 Pinto and have already checked with a locksmith. He said I only need to take out the locks from the door and trunk, since the door uses the same key for ignition. He said I could also bring the key codes and he can make it from that for a lot less. Is it possible that the 2 unlabeled 5 digit numbers on the door jamb sticker are key codes? What would the key code numbers look like? Could someone give me an example?
I don't think those codes are anywhere on the car. My 67 mustang, which has been in my family since new, has the key codes written in the original owners manual. The dealer aparently wrote them in when they sold the car. I used them once to make a key and I must say it worked but it was not like the originals. Not sure if the guy made a slight mistake or what but the key was always tight.
The key codes aren't anywhere on the car itself. They would have originally been embossed on little metal discs provided along with the keys when the vehicle was new. If you happen to have the original owner's manual packet, you might check there but if not, you'll probably have to take the lock into the locksmith.

I was hoping that the number F0118 and P0100 was the codes. Depending on how much a locksmith is, I might go the route that another Pinto owner did and buy new locks at O'Rielly or Autozone. The only problem is having separate keys for ignition, doors and trunk.
If same key fits door and ignition then code would be FA0001 thru FA1863. If a round head key is used for door and or trunk code would be FB0001 thru FB1863.
Thanks everyone for answering my question(s). Guess I'll have to move on to step 2, whatever that is. Maybe I'll get lucky and the keys will turn up.
"IF" your orginal key fit both the door & ignition, I think taking a door
lock to a locksmith may be the best route for you to take. I only say
this because replacing the Ign. tumbler assy. without a key is no easy
task.
x2!
I recently took a '54 Ford keyless ignition switch to the local key-smith. It took him approx 10 minutes to make a new key (which also worked the door locks). He charged me $15 including the key blank.

$15??!!! That sounds like the route for me. I didn't know you had to have the key to remove the ignition lock.
This is what the key code tags look like

my #s are FA03** and FB06**
Don't know if that helps

p.s. sorry I put the pic twice, flickr changed how they do things since last time
I'm impressed, Chuck! I have the little key code discs for several of my vehicles but since I never figured out the picture-posting thing on this site, I didn't bother to dig them out.
