Title: 2.0 tensioner project.
Post by: 72Wagon on September 27, 2010, 07:15:43 PM
Well this is my new 2.0 tensioner that I made using an old tensioner, my lathe and 2 very common sealed alternator bearings. Bearings can spin independently (not really necessary) and they can be replaced easily if ever needed. Bearings cost less than $15 each.
Have not installed yet but will post how it works when I can.

Very cool! I haven't seen a "DIY" professionally built part like this since my old custom computer days!

I'm interested, I may buy one from you to have around as a spare for Brownie!

Thanks, it was not too hard to make once I had all the measurements. I did start with an old tensioner (Ford).  I have seen two different types, one has a small diameter bearing on a shaft that presses into the steel plate. The second has a larger diameter bearing that presses into a hub that is welded to the plate. I used the first, made a shaft to fit the bearings and the original hole in the plate. the shaft was pressed into the plate and welded. Shaft drilled and tapped for washer and allen screw to hold it all together. And yes the bolt was Loctited during installation.
In order to make another A old tensioner of the correct style would be needed, or I would have to reingineer this set up for the other style tensioner.
