i ran a mustang ii c4 and bell in my 76 v8 wagon.  i needed to do a little cutting and reshaping where the firewall transitions to the tunnel for the upper bell to block bolts.  i also ground down one rib on the bell for better clearance.  if you get a chance, search this site for v8 swaps, lots of good info.

Russ

Yep lots of good info from ol "78"

However i must let you know that if you still have more specific questions then feel free to let er rip on this post.

Ive been around the block a bit on this but obviously only on my 71. The 74 and up has different and easier methods.
Also if your really adventurous you can get the headers to run "properly" without using swap headers. If your interested ill unload. LOL

Most of all expect ALOT more work and more money than you thought of to do this..

Oh and have fun as well!

Yup, I agree, lots more money!!!  Mine had a V8 when I started and I am all ready over $15,000 and counting. Once you put in the V8 make sure everything else will not break (suspension, rear, frame rails, etc) and then you will want more power.

Well not to scare him out of the project it shoudnt cost that much just for a solid setup. It all depends on how much "bling" you want and how much custom work you can do yourself.
I sourced allmost 90% of my stuff that i needed on Ebay. So if you are smart, dedicated and have lots and lots of time on your hands you can save considerable money.
Good luck!

If your talking about the Auto C4 then Yes and no. The C4 will do it with a bellhousing, convertor, and flywheel change. However, the internals are very weak for a V8. You need to change the Foward and reverse drums to the V8 style, the valve body, and the govenor at the back of the trans.

Im fairly certian that any of the other transmissions that came stock in a Pinto are completely useless no matter what the mods.

Its best to get yourself a good running V8 C4 or do a T5 swap. Those are really the only viable options.
If you Chose C4 to make it fit better, use a Mustang II Bellhousing, Convertor(9 3/8 bolt pattern) and Flywheel (144 teeth 28oz balance).

The T5 is also a great option but i have no info on that swap.

Nothing wrong if the price is right. If its free or near free and running then go for it!
However , i come from the build it yourself or get a rebuilt engine. You never know the history of a used engine. It could be ready for 75,000 miles or ready to die next week. Then you have to pull it again and rebuild it anyways. Plus when you build a small car big engine vehicle your GOING to lean on it and a used engine will quickly show its age.
If you chose to rebuild or buy a rebuilt engine then id go for the 87 and up years with the roller cam. I know you can get nearly as much HP from a flat tappet cam, but the roller cam is so dam sweet when you fire up the engine, NO 3000rpm BREAK IN!!! That alone was reason enough for me to go roller. Plus they make an easy 25 more HP and seem to be snappier.  Get a whole engine so you don't have to chase down every last thing needed for the build as i had to do.
Throw a decent set of heads on it like the E7's with some mild porting and 1.94 valves a e303 or a b303 cam with a 650cfm Holley, Edelbrock AirGap a good ignition ,and you'll be pulling in the neighborhood of 275-300 hp with a good tune up.
Aluminum heads and a bigger cam and the (nearly) the Sky's the limit. ( or your pocket book )

roller cams started in 85 out of the box.  also, if i remember right, 87-91 5.0 hos came with forged pistons.  id stick with an 87-91 HO motor for the compression, e7 heads (which are kinda garbage but work) and forged slugs.  86 and older had crappier heads as did all non HOs, along with other differances.  gt40 and gt40p heads are some of the best the 5.0 saw from the factory.  gt40p is an explorer head which had a smaller valve than the cobra gt40.  even with the smaller valve, the p head out flows (from what they say) the cobra head due to runner design.  bad side is that special headers are needed with the p heads due to the angle the plugs stick out.
