Title: Cam Timing help
Post by: fast64ranchero on September 06, 2010, 02:30:52 PM
I did search and couldn't find the canswer I need,
my timing belt tensioner broke yesterday causing my belt to come off, I replaced the tensioner and installed the belt but it's not right, here's my problem, I do not have the stock timing belt cover, nor do I have the stock belt or pullies, my Erslinger pullies are not marked... I need someone that know how to set the cam timing using the "string" method.
Here's what I did,
I placed the cranckshaft keyway straight up, (should be TDC Correct)?
I placed the camshaft dow pin pointed up (dow in camshaft at about the 11 O'Clock postion) set the cam by running a string straight through the dow pin, through the center of the cam to the center of the Aux. shaft bolt,

something is not right, I did get it to run, but ended up with the cam turned 2 teeth clockwise to get it to run ok, car is down on power and I had to take about 10% fuel out of it to keep it from cutting out while under boost from being so rich..  Thanks for the help...

I assume you have a 2.3.  Below is a link to the string method but they have a belt cover and stock pulley's.  Hope this will help some.

A call to Esslinger might be what you need.

I called Esslinger today, gto through to the Tech department, I told them I had there there wide belt round tooth kit with there serp, power pulley, they stated to aling it with the marks, I told them there was not any marks on the ones I have, the lady ask how long ago I bought the kit, (maybe some went out without marks)?? and said someone would get back to me... nice to know the person answering the tech line could not give me the answer, Oh well, I got the answer from another site and here is what you do:

with cam gear and crank gear off, put the cam dow pin straight down (6 o'clock) and the crank keyway straight up (12 o'clock) I'm not running a distributor so I didn't have to mess with the Aux shaft....

Thanks anyway,
