Title: Milwaukee newspaper article
Post by: 78squirewagon on September 03, 2010, 06:42:50 AM
I hate the picture and had to guess at some of the info. He also got two commericals mixed up/combined but at least we (Pinto's) are getting noticed  ;D

If all goes well, I hope to make it on at least one or two TV stations next weekend with Dave and his CW.  We are kicking off the Wounded Warrior fund drive at a local car show and I invited all of the local media. That's how this story came about.

Mark,
A very nice photo and a good article, although the writer seems a bit too preoccupied with the gas tank issue.  That's pretty much the norm whenever Pintos are the topic of discussion.  The only other thing is that I think you grossly underestimated the number of Pintos in existance.  We have well over 6000 members here and while I'm sure not every one of them actually has a Ford Pinto, there are many who have several!  All in all, I think you represented our little ponies quite admirably.  I look forward to seeing you and you gorgeous Squire in Carlisle next June!

Dwayne

I was guessing on actual, on the road, registered cars. Like I mentioned in the article, I only know of 6-7 in WI. I am sure there are more but I never see them. How many of our members cars are legal to drive? LOL!!!  I hope we get 200 or more at Carlisle  ;D
Now to hear the wrath of the Losers (in a fun, good way)  ;D  Maybe I will win another horse's a** award for this  ;D  (for the rest of you, the local spys are still on here so this was not aimed at you  ;D )

i work at a small news paper and have been trying to get my bobcat in the paper for 4+ years from local car shows.  i made it once as a distance shot in a parade and said thanks   they said we did not even notice it was in the pic.( probaly wold not have made it) they tell me no one is intrested in the car   everone wants to see muscle cars and such.they just need to spend time with me at a show and then they would understand differently.
any way congrats  and see you at carlisle.

Mr. Stingle does some really cool human interest stories as well as some pretty odd ones  :D  I had sent out a press release to all of the local media about a show Dave and I are going to be at on 9-11 as well as the 40th anniversary of the Pinto so Mr. Stingle picked it up and ran with it.  He was at my house for over 1 1/2 hours talking about the cars, loooking at my collection of Pinto stuff and finding out more about Carlisle

The comments section after the article has some people with fond memories about Pintos. Also, I'd bet that there are way more than 300-400 Pintos registered in California alone.  There always seems to be a couple for sale on Craigslist around here.

The article was pretty great but I'll take exception to the "bumper bolts" thing. The recall kit, as I recall (pun sort of intended) included a plastic shield that wrapped around the front of the tank and was secured by the tank straps to keep the tank from rupturing if it got shoved into the differential and its bolts in the instance of a rear-end collision. It also included the fuel filler tube. I do know what I'm talking about with the shield because I've had to remove my '74's gas tank twice now. Plus, all three of my non-wagons have/had the plastic shield, all in the same location on the gas tank (the front between it and the differential).

On another note... thank you thank you THANK YOU for not saying they "blow up" ten thousand times!!! lol.  ;D

I just showed him the recall kit that I have and he took it from there. I guess I should have gone into more details about it LOL!! I am finally going to start showing the kit at a couple of events this year just to see peoples reaction  ;)
My whole idea was to promote Carlisle 2011 and Stampede. That kinda got lost in his story but at least the public knows about the Pinto owners  ;D  And again, I guessed about how many Pintos are still registered based on how many I have seen around here and the ones that are planning on going to Carlisle. It just makes people appreciate them a little more if they know that not very many of them are  left  :D
As far as the whole blowing up thing goes, my wife and I have pretty much programed our brains/mouths to say "They fixed the problem in 1974. Only the coupes/hatchbacks  had the problem and the wagons were never an issue"
