Title: LED taillights
Post by: peleus21 on August 22, 2010, 04:23:28 PM
i don't know if anyone makes a kit for us yet but i would like to know how many people would be interested in a kit. i can make a kit that bolt onto the back of the stock wagon lens and would give it that led look as well as make the lights much brighter.  i have to look at my parts car to see if i could make a runabout set as well. i can post pics when i get the first one finished.

My day job is in electronic manufacturing, so if you'd like to conceptualize this and work with me I'd be up for it. Not trying to jump in on your business, just trying to offer my skillset. I have access to parts vendors, PCB layout people, PCB fab shops, contract manufacturures. Can make a slick professional product. Write me if you want to collaborate.

They already have a replacement bulb in led,and if you replace both front and rear
you need to install a high ohm resistor in the circuit. The flasher won't flash because the led's draw so little wattage, trust me I've been the route!

i think it can be built in to blink like stock. popbumper i will contact you. and this is not a replacement bulb i am talking a full LED looking light. the full width and hight of the housing would be led's. i am ordering my LED's and making my own for sure. when finished i will take pictures.

That would be interesting. I for sure would like to see a set since I want to do the same thing with mine and Im considering building my own. Remember even if you dont get alot of response from the Pinto crowd there are a ton of Maverick guys that would be interested trust me. Ive brought up the topic on the Maverick forums before, there is interest!!!

i will do that too then. i will have to go to the junk yard and get a maverick housing to see if it work. the wagon is my test car. the housing splits into 2 peices and i will be replacing the whole back half. i think i am gonna make it so the bracke and turn signal top, back up in the middle still but the park light/ running light will be behind the bottom red reflector. i hope to have the first one finished for end of next week.

as we all know, the plastic behind the blinkers is usually messed up. I got an idea that seems to have worked----so far. 2 pieces of 1/4" plastic shaped like the lens. I drilled 12 holes to fit 5mm leds. 4 banks of three lights.
The running light runs through 4 large resistors in series with a diode and the blinker is run through a smaller resistor and a diode. The plastic is drilled in two circles with the lights mounted in silicon. The lights protrude slightly through the other side so I glued a frame around them and on top of that placed the other piece of plastic. On the back side I glued a mount for the screws. I tried sandblasting the outer piece just to diffuse the light but decided to mount the original blinker lens on top of that.. LEDs are easy to work with and all the info in readily available on the net. Cheap, easy and last for ever. I used very bright yellow LEDs and the resistor calculator is very user friendly. Plan on doing the rears but so far they're in good shape. for 10 bucks it's worth a try
