Title: 400 HP
Post by: STREETREBEL on August 09, 2010, 11:35:11 PM
I guess I'll give-up on the mod motor idea.
So what's the best (easy) way to make 400 hp?
I really don't want a radical idle or finicky motor.
Let's hear some suggestions. No NOS.

just get some nice forged pistons that are good for around 8-1 comp then put in some billet rods a nice little cam and put a turbo on it.

400hp from a v8 should be relativly easy on low boost.

My goal for my bobcat is 400hp to the real wheels but im gunna do it with a 2.3T.

With a standard issue 302 and the right set of heads combined with a mild cam and right size carb, you should be able to produce near 400 and not sacrifice too much driveability. Most of the power comes from the heads...just choose pistons to keep the compression ratio within a street-able 93 octane range (under 11:1) and choose a good flowing set of heads with a proper cam setup and you will be doing good.

I was thinking about lowering the compression on my 13.5:1 drag car and running a blow-through turbo but then again I'm already putting down 491 at the rear so I think I'll just mill another set of rings and put about a 200 shot of the giggle gas...I figure I'll be running low 10's then  :2fast4u: even though you mentioned no nitrous that is just the route I've been planning for a little upgrade...

Thanks for all the suggestions.
How do you fit a turbo under the hood with a V8?
Should I build my 302 or drop in a 351 with heads?

Remove the fender wells theres a twin turbo V8 build on here already.

An as for the 302/351 thing that would be personal prefrence me personally id prolly do the windsor build.

Since 383w-427w stroker kits are getting quite cheap anymore.

My .02:
If working on a budget I would pursue the 302. That way you can use your oil pan, intake, ignition and headers you already have. Also, heads will be cheaper because you can get away with something along the lines of Performer RPMs, which would be almost too small for a 351 (non stock) block. Good ignition and a 331 stroker kit will easily put you in the range you want to be but not stress out the block, which can only handle about 500 horses.
However if budget is not a big concern then I would definately think about a 351 based motor.

I am doing a '72 pinto as we speak, it runs an 8.8 rear w/4.11 gears, Pro c4 w/trans brake, 45oo stall, up front is a 331 sbf w/10.8-1 comp, anderson cam, AFR 185 heads, Fuynnel web intake w/850 mighty demon, all balanced and should make around 400+ in a car weighing 1700 lbs w/o driver.
I would put together a 5.0 if you already have most of the existing parts you need. just my .02 G/L

The car was bought after everyone got out of it what they wanted (everything) I cut the inner engine panels out down to the front frame rails and out to the radiator support. I then built a 1" x 1" frame rail to support the new radiator and fenders, leaving the left and right side of the fender open inside the engine compartment, it may help to keep it cooler. I'm making a chin spoiler that will direct the air flow to the radiator in hopes of keeping it cool, I'm using a radiator from a V8 maverick and it seems to work fine.
I'm sure the pinto purest will not like my cutting up of this car but its all in going fast for less. after I get the engine in and take some pics I'll try and send some for you to see if you'd like......LMk.

Also can build a 302 roller.  They are all over the place and easy to get one to 400hp.

1700lbs is pretty light....even for these cars. I have my inner fenders cut out and WITHOUT the twin turbo setup and it weighed 2840lbs with me in it (n/a 408 stroker)

Yeah, My 72 Turbo car with a chromoly bar in it, 3/4 tank gas without me in it is 2380 lbs. To Drop 680 lbs would be great but from where?

I have everything in it I will need, fuel is a 5gal fuel cell, No interior (yet), I'm going to install the motor next tuesday evening and will try to get an official weight slip, We came to the 1700lb weight by weighting engine/trans seperate then each part till we had a number, I will say this IS the litest car I've ever done, even at 1700 lbs + it should take flight. right now I'm just glad its going together as well as it is.

I have a friend that will sell me a Kuntz built 337 shortblock, minus cam.
It's more than I need but the price is right. Now I just need a small roller cam
and matching heads. I'm thinking maybe some AFR's and a Crower cam.
Oh, and a 100 shot till 2nd gear then another 100 on top. :hypno:

I had a '71 that was stripped of the interior except for the drivers seat.  Windshield was glass all the rest were plastic.
Door window mechanisms removed,
no back seat
no carpet
no sound deadener
no nothing.

4 cylinder with a turbo and IIRC it weighed in at a little over 1800.  what a rattle trap that was.

sure was a lot of fun though

I think if you run a cro-mo tube chassis, lexan windows, all aluminum interior w/Kirkey seat, all fiberglass body except quarters & roof & an all aluminum engine as well as the lightest wheels you can buy, you may come in around 16-1700 lbs. Id love to try it but I want to drive it on the street.....

I think the lexan windows is pushing it........I'll have you an actual weight in a week as work is keeping me busy, but i'll see how close it is, if I'm wrong,  I'm wrong....... :'(
