Title: Removing rear axle assembly-where to put jackstands?
Post by: russosborne on August 07, 2010, 10:38:15 PM
I've heard about using the rear bumper mounts, but my jackstands aren't tall enough to have the car at a workable height for me while doing this. Afterwards that might be a good spot for working on the interior and anything not under the car. :-)
I want to remove the leaf springs at the same time, if that makes any difference.
Interior is stripped, no hatch, no doors. No engine or trans or front sheet metal either.

I have them under the rear axle right now, and it really works well. Wish I could do both. :-)

Thanks,
Russ

If I remember correctly (it's been a loooonnngggg time) just ahead of the front spring perches should work out fine.

I had to stop a guy once who had a car on the lift all the way up & was going to pull the leafs with the axle stands under the axle housing itself as he was removeing the nuts from the axle u-bolts.

A sure fire recipe for death !!

Thanks.
I will have to double check that that isn't one of the places with rust. Most of the floor is clean, my luck that won't be one of them.

When I replaced the springs on my car, I replaced the front spring eye bolt back in its place and put the jackstand there. That's the same area I lift from when using my floor jack.

thanks. were do you put them before you remove the spring?
I may not have a bolt to put back there, I have a feeling I am going to have to cut them off.

I put the floor jack lifting pad on the area just in front of where the spring eye bolt is located. It's kinda like a box-type structure there you can lift from since it would be the strongest area.

Thanks.
Suppose I really need to get underneath and take a good look around. Since I am hoping to remove the rear end this or next weekend, going to have to do it soon. :-)

Ahhh, how about where the owner's manual tells you... at those notches below the door jamb area?

what's an owner's manual?

seriously, I haven't had good luck putting anything but the stock jack on those. Not on any Ford. There isn't enough there to hold the weight when it is on a jackstand, those have always folded up on me when I have tried. If it was just a flat spot no problem. In my experience anyway. But then again I do have my own personal black cloud, so maybe others don't have the same issues I do.
Thanks,
Russ

Russ,

I have had the same issue. It's just not strong enough to use a full size jack that isn't basically clamping down on the area where they say to put the jack. Those areas are barely good enough to use the original jack that came with the car.

Mine haven't curled... but then I'm careful how I place that jack plate (?) (the round disc the car is resting on when it's being raised or lowered).  I'm too chicken to try any other place other than those notches! lol.  :hypno:

I normally use the rear axle. Never had any issues with that.
Except of course when that is the part you are going to be removing. :-)
The car is so stripped that it may not matter. The rear end is the last big heavy piece still attached. Just haven't had the energy to get out and do anything much lately. I have to get it off in the next 2 weeks or so though. It is going bye bye along with the engine and trans.

I just had a crazy thought. If anyone has heard of the Hemi Under Glass wheelstander, well Bob Riggle is a friend of my dad's. I just had a vision of "Mod Motor under Hatch".

maybe I need to get to bed.

Do you know waht gear ratio that 6.75 rear is? I'm looking for a set of 2.73 gears. I just need the ring gear and pinio with shims.

No, I don't. I never bothered to check.
