Title: 4.6 Mod 4v engine
Post by: STREETREBEL on August 06, 2010, 10:27:50 PM
Anyone know if a 4V engine will fit between the fenders without tubing out the front?

   errrr... What?

4V engine? as in? 4 BBL V-8? 4 Valve per cylinder?  Like a Mod motor?

Absolutely can't do it. :-)
Seriously, if you are talking about a 4.6L DOHC mod motor, it has been done to a Mustang II, and it didn't look like they did any cutting. But it was a professional shop that did the work. And I don't know what transmission they used.
I am working on putting an SOHC from a 96 Mustang GT in my 79. Hence the first comment above. :-) You can follow along in my project post "Just about to get started...." here. I have the 4R70W trans that came with my engine, and I am worried that it won't fit without modifying the trans tunnel. But will just have to wait and see. I am a long way from that point.

Now, if you are talking about an early Pinto, just putting a regular 302/5.0 in those is difficult, so I don't know about that one.

Sorry, I take back part of what I said. They did have to cut the aprons for the headers.
heres a link to pictures, all I can find so far.

and here is a link to one I just found, with a 5.4 in it. Mustang II again though.

Thanks for the links.
I was talking about the 4.6 mod motor.
I had a line on a 2004 cobra engine.
I would love to put that in my Pinto!

I hadn't intended to go with a 4.6, or even a V8. No money. But this one was given to me by a friend, with computer, wiring harnesses, dash, gas tank, just about everything I will need, so figured why not.

That would be a cool ride when done, but unless you are very fabrication savy it will be a disaster. my .02
Just put a 5.0 0r 5.8 in and it will still be cool..you can sell that 4.6 and wiring for enough to finance your project.

I did a little measuring. Looks like I would for sure rebuild the fenderwells.
And move the firewall. And tube the front frame.
The little Pinto just isn't long enough.
BUT, it would be so cool to pop the hood and see that big'ol hemi setting there!

This is a 5.4L out of a GT500 & it's huge. Even with aluminum heads I bet it still weighs 550 lbs. The 6 speed trans. is a monster too.

While it would sure be freakin' cool, Id end up turning my Pinto into a tube chassis race car to do it. Id be better off picking up a tube chassis car & just putting it in there.

I've got my Maverick setup for the DOHC 4.6 right now. Its tight in the Maverick and took ALOT of fab work to get it to sit where I wanted. I measured my Pinto because I had bought a wrecked Cobra and had an extra engine, trans setup and thought about putting it in the Pinto...till I measured. It can be done but you better be a very good fabricator! #1 problem I saw is no matter how you go about it (flipping the manifolds, headers or whatever) the exhaust manifold comes out right on top of the frame rail. The engine is almost as long as the entire engine bay with accessories. The DOHC 4.6 is a beast of an engine, just fraeking huge. I love em, but honestly if I had to do it again I would go with a Chevy LS engine.

Thanks everyone. I've had a lot of good folks tell me not to try it.
So for now it's a no go. But someday it will happen!
