Hi,
I was told to use a ranger rear end when building my pinto with a 302? I was also told that they are 8.8 rear ends? is this true? will it work? and would it be sufficient? If so, do i have to modify the rear end at all? I don't want to have to chop the rear end, i was hoping there would be a less-hassle solution for a rear end for use with a 302 and a t5 tranny? any suggestions? thanks all!
Also, one thing, if i do need to use a ranger rear end, what year of ranger and what model? a 2.3L a 3.0L a 4.0L? thanks everyone!
The easiest solution would be to use an 8" from a V6 Pinto or Mustang II. They are a bolt in swap. Good luck...

I agree with tigger. As far as 8.8 inch ranger rears I believe they are only available in the later 1990's rangers or explorers. You would have to relocate the spring perches, and they are wider than a pinto rear. Plus it might look a little odd with 5 bolt wheels on the back and 4 bolt wheels on the front. not much room in a pinto to begin with, without hauling 2 spare tires! lol.
Anyway the 8 inch rear is going to be a lot tougher than an 8.8".
The 8 inch rears were offered as an option for some 4cyl pintos and bobcats as well. Im not 100 percent sure but i think the spring perches were different on the mustang II 8 inch rears. Uhhh I believe there is some info in the pinto FAQ section of this site as well. Happy hunting.
I agree, the pinto/bobcat 8inch rear is the easy way to go IF you can find one, and the mustang II rears will fit too. If you are planning to do a brake upgrade in the front, like me (granada 5 lug), a 5 lug rear is what you need. From what I have been told, the 8 inch is better then the 8.8, but most of them will not be a direct bolt in. If you can do the engine swap, you should be able to mod the rear to fit. I am working with a 60's stang one right now, not bad, got it figured out, just have to finish it. Whatever you use WILL be better than the stock 6.75 rear.
