Trying to dial my 2.3l carb for the 1978 pinto. Motor is stock except I bored it over .30
It runs fine when first started up, idles great, but when you give it gas and the choke turns off it starts chugging. Turning on the ac kills the motor.
I need some steps/walkthrough of dialing this thing in. Anyone?
Anybody? I understand it as there are 3 things. The alen screw for how far open the flaps are, the fuel air mixure screw at the base of the carb, and the idle screw.. I just cant seem to find a happy median...
The only adjustments you can make are to the choke (position and rpm), idle mixture and base idle. I doubt choke is your issue and you should be able to get it to operating temp and see if the choke blades are fully open. If it is, continue on to base idle. At operating temp, back the base idle screw out as far as you can with the engine still running. I have been able to to turn it all the way out, but it just barely chugs. Turn the idle mixture screw in or out until you have the highest idle. Now adjust the base idle again to a normal idle speed. If you cannot adjust the idle mixture or have to have the base idle screw in more than 1/4-1/2 turn, you have other issues. Could be your jetting is wrong, or (as I remember on the later 5200's) there is a fuel solenoid on the top of the carb that is a PIA. Try unplugging the solenoid wire (not the one to the choke) to see if there is a change. A rebuild may be in your future.
Its a brand new carb. So shouldnt need to be rebuilt..
The choke shouldn't need to be adjusted either, but this will drag out forever if you assume too much. When you say "new", is this just a replacement 5200, or specific to a '78 2.3? New and rebuilt/reman are 2 different things, and will present different challenges.
More detail.
Oh, and check for vacuum leaks.
