Title: A Pinto a Snake and a Sewer Rat walk into a blender
Post by: OhSix9 on July 21, 2010, 03:58:31 AM
Aka. Project Pimpin' Pinto as it has been known from its inception.

after much toil and tinkering Here she is.  not done but running and has all the required stuff to pass a safety . Kinda Beta 0.76

Whats all in it...
1978 ford pinto wagon, 88 tbird long block, 86 pk merkur harness and computer integrated with factory pinto harness (parts in the mail to get me into the ecu so i can reprogram and go 80mm MAF) Inter cooler and big turbo sitting in the garage.

urethane everything up front. new ball joints tie rods and rack.  5 bolt granada brakes, gm metric calipers on adapters   7/16 spacers to clear the bearings with 98 17x 8 cobra rims on all 4 corners.  215/40s up front and 275/40's out back , 86 t bird t5 and a fresh clutch, used an 94 explorer diff and squeezed the rims in the factory wheel wells with a blond hair to spare. got new leafs made and then pulled one long one to adjust the ride height. (adding some bags to control the butt end anyways so the lost spring rate is not a big deal.) tied it all together with an aluminum drive shaft from a 97 awd explorer. Didn't even have to change the yokes on either end :)  boxed the rear area and dropped in an 8 gal fuel cell relocated the battery and left room for the throttle bottle .  Got the roll cage and sub frame connectors on the garage floor still to go in.  Major delays with bodywork prevented all the goodies from making the show this year.

Bodywise we gutted the cruising wagon panels, fusored and spot welded the skins to the car and smoothed it all.   Did some rust repair and shaved the marker lights out.   Eagerly awaiting for Map to be ready to ship his rocker moldings and spats.  Also inlaid the turbo coupe scoops into the hood and used a splash mold cut down 76 cobra scoop to cover the required hole in the hood.  Did a glass dash cap with boost and tach.

Tons of other stuff....     Much more to come.
Please browse the album.

I look forward to some feedback from fellow enthusiasts.

A very clever and good looking kludge!   Looks like it is still mostly Ford, tho -
Very professional workmanship, too.
That will turn some heads for sure when done, IF they can catch sight of it!

Love how you modified the dash pad.

The again I love porthole Pintos with turbos.....

Are you going to use the Ford "interheater" style intercooler on this?

thanks for the comments so far.

Yes i have a disgustingly large fmic for it.   will go in place with the precision t3/4 hybrid that is waiting in the garage for the moates goodies to show up so we can start makin some power around here.

The goal of the car from the outset was to use all modern ford parts in the drive train  Additionally i did not want to use anything custom in the way of drive shafts or rear axles so when it starts breakin parts they are easy to come by.

here is a link to a fbook album with way more shots of the progress to this point. it should be public but if not let me know i will open it up or just send a friend request

First Off, WOW! I love it. Secound, Were at the shop the other nite knocking back a couple of cold ones with the crew when I told them the idea I had for the dash? (just joking) That dash is something like I was explaining to them what I am working on. They still want to have me committed. I think they were hunting a stright jacket. ANY WAY! I sure hope you show up at carlise next year. I am gonna take the laptop down to the shop and show'em. That way the guys in the white coats won't take me away. This wagon is insane.

Looks good man! Really like it. I hope to have mine back on the ground this afternoon when I get off work. I need 2 17x8 Cobra R wheels, where did you get yours? I can find them in 4 lug all day long but havent had any luck in the 5lug. BTW the 97 Cobra disc brake rear fit like a glove and the 17x9 w 275/40 17 tuck under the wheel well!
