Title: Need To Know
Post by: blupinto on July 20, 2010, 01:29:41 PM
Hey! I'm going to the Vista Rod Run in a couple weeks. There are a few car snobs there :(  so I want to give them something not to be snotty about. Can anyone tell me about the 1.6 Kent engine... like what it powered across the Pond? I want to say I was told it went into Lotus cars but I need concrete facts... or at least facts from someone in the know.  ;D  Knowledge is power, and it would be nice to have some factoids to give the motorheads likely to be out there.  :D  Thank you.

I appreciate the link Cookieboy, but I don't trust wikipedia. I understand anybody and everybody puts their opinions- facts or otherwise- in that. Thank you, though. :D

Below are a few more links.  Looks like the snobyist application is the open wheeled road racing class "Formula Ford 1600".  Since Ford Racing recently started making replacement blocks, it seems the class is still popular.  Have fun at the rod run.

Thank you Jerry.  ;D  Is there something here about stock Kent engines? Is that what one link referred to as a "pre crossflow Kent"? What I'm needing is what this engine was a powerplant to before the Pinto came to be. I am grateful for the other info too though.  ;D I can probably tell people the potential of this little engine that can- and does!  ;D

Becky,
You won't go wrong with the History on the Wikipedia page for the Ford Kent history. The Burton and BAT pages are for people who want to tweak their stock motors. Only offshore English Ford people are going to want to debate any issues about the motor or Racing people stateside.
Your enthusiasm is commendable, but keep in mind, not everyone is going to grill you about that engine. Now if you decide to "pump  it UP" , well then you can really swing a conversational sledgehammer.  ;) ( e.g. a 1600 Pinto that can eat a warmed up Civic for lunch! )
Otherwise Look up English Ford Cortina and Escort model history, you'll get enough background...

That Diet must be messin with ya ;)

Oh, I know I won't be grilled (dammit Joe, did you have to say GRILLED? lol!) but I want to at least be able to say, "This little engine was what Ford of England put into..." so the hot rod heads who wonder aloud what a Pinto is doing in "their" show.  As for tweaking Ruby RedHot's power plant... she's hot enough! lol.  I just don't want to sound like an eejit if I get faulty info from wikipedia.  ;D

I have no doubt you're right Matt... the VERY sad part is on Saturday before the show they're having a Smokin' Q Classic BBQ contest... and I can't have any! WAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!! I LOVE BBQ... and the book I'm currently reading mentioned hush puppies... oh jeez I'm dying here!

Alberto, help me! You told me a couple things about my '71 and the engine that I had no clue about... ;D
