Title: map light
Post by: dholvrsn on July 18, 2010, 01:28:36 PM
Are Pinto map lights supposed to have some sort of lens in them? If they do, then do any popular Fords that I could find at U-Pull-It type places have them? Thanks!

The lens/cap end from a 1986 Mustang map light will fit (I assume all Fox Mustangs would be same).  It is not a perfect match (the Mustang's is slightly stepped at the parting line) but probably not noticeable.  Bring your lens-less end cap with you to yard to confirm fittment.  Have fun.

I know a few Pintos had that option. Mustang IIs definitely had them. I'm not sure whether all MIIs had them or it was an option. I have seen Pintos with the map-lights, though. I believe they were latter-day, as I'm not seeing the map-light option mentioned in my '71-'74 Pinto and '74 Mustang II dealer brochures.

I'm not sure when those came into being, but I know the '77 Mercury Bobcat Villager my folks had was equipped with one.

Couple of months ago I pulled one without the lens out of a '78 Fairmont coupe 'cause I thought it might be the same as the Pinto's.

What's the part number on your Pinto light?

TIA

Mike

I'm not sure if you need the lens for the dome light or on the end
of the map light.
There is a NOS dome light lens on eBay
  # 270606809837
Not much time left on it - 12 hrs as of 2AM today eastern time.
However it is also in their store and so far no bids on it.

Not all fox mustangs are the same.  The map light in my 86 Saleen is just the map light, no dome light.  The dome light is in the center of the roof on that car.  I believe the map light / dome light combo's, similar to the Pinto's came on the t-top cars.  The mustang combo light does not have the clips for the sunvisor ends.  I believe the lens is the same.  Below are some pics.  The first pic is the map light from my Saleen.  The second pic is one from an SVO mustang that I got for parts with the lens.  The lens looks the same as the NOS one on Ebay.  The third pic is one form my current Pinto parts car that did not come with a lens.  The last pic is the pinto one with the lens installed.
