Title: Crappy day at the race track!
Post by: 71pintoracer on July 11, 2010, 08:56:41 PM
Well today was the first time I hve been to the track since I put the V-8 in my car. It is a 5.0 H.0. T-5 from an '89 Mustang. It has Hooker headers, a 289 Torker intake and a dyno tuned 600 Holley. My 19 year-old son has a 2000 GT Mustang and he has been begging me to go to the track and test our cars out. Today was test-n-tune so we went. I bolted on my 9.5/22.0/13 M&H Racemasters and away we went.
The first few rounds the problem I had was the locker in the 8" rear wouldn't lock. I spun off the line and hit the rev limiter in first and second and shifted late both times.  :P
Then for whatever reason the locker started working, it launched hard and then fell on it's face.  >:(
It was really hot so I figured maybe it's vapor locking so I put ice around the carb and let it cool down. The last two times I ran it still hick-upped a little after it launched and when I speed shifted into second. It still only ran a 8.60. (1/8th mile)
What makes it so bad it the little 2.0 ran a best of 8.47 on a 75 shot of nitrous. What is also confusing is I have one of those G-Meter timers and every time I used it to test the 4-cyl it was dead-on. I ran some test runs with the V-8 and with street tires, taking off in second gear and easing into the throttle to minimize wheel spin, I ran an 8.20!! And no, I don't think it was a fluke, I ran 8.20's three different times. (12.07-12.10 1/4 mile)
I know it was not running up to par but still... 8.60?? It just seems so fast on the street! I mean this thing has never missed a beat and it will get sideways in third gear and smoke the tires! I was really dissapointed to say the least.
So to all you guys running basicly stock V-8's, what kind of times are you running? Am I expecting too much? Is my G-meter full of mud?  :-\ :( ???

Well I'm not running a stock V8 by any means but my best at the track was a 12.31 @ 108mph. That's running a hopped up 289, C-4, 9" with 4:11 gears and running drag radials. The car is as gutted as you can get and has a cage. Without knowing all the specs on your car it's hard to say whats going on. Was that a misprint on the tire size?? 13"??

Nope, not a misprint, 13's. Got them from Jeg's, a lot of the import guys run them on the front.
I don't know what my car weighs but it is not gutted at all. The engine is an HO which means it has a roller cam and forged pistons. I was launching at 4000 and shifting at 6500. The rear gear is a 3.55. (another reason for the 13" tires).
I might make some runs on the street with the slicks and see what it does in cooler weather, (if it ever cools down!!) When I got in the truck to leave the track the temp display read 101!
What are your 1/8th mile times? All we have close by here are 1/8th mile tracks, closest 1/4 mile is about 100 miles away.
The 2.0 ran 13.40's all day in the 1/4. :)

I'm running mid 7's at the 1/8 mile. The common tire size around here is a 26" tall on 4:11 gears in a small car like a Pinto.

thats crazy, id of thought it would go a little better than that...   last october we had a meet and there was a guy at the meet who runs consistent 11.40s in his stang and i had never run anyone in my pinto turbo... he had his race tune and drag radials and i was on street tires.... he got his feelings hurt as i pulled a full car on him by the top of second.... so he redid his car this last winter in hopes of a rematch... he didnt like it when he found out i redid mine too..... were expecting 400+ to the wheels and 10s in the 1/4
