Hi al . I just got back from vacation and put in a new intake maniflod gasket on my 2.8 V6.The oil leak is stopped , but now I have low oil pressure. The light comes on at less that 800 rpm.I just changed the oil and its no better. The oil pressure was good before.Any ideas?l
Dave if it was mine I would pull sending unit snd install mechanical gauge to see were its at if looks good buy new send unit they dont cost much. Fred :)
YeaI was thinking the same thing , but the engine sounds a little noisey.I am going to look for the relefe valve and clean it , and mabe pull and reintstall the distributor.I was thinking mabe the oil pump shaft is not in all the way.
I pulled and re set the distributor still the same. Does any one know where the relive valve is?Seem like that mabe be stuck probilay with some gasket materal .I know the pressure is low because the valvetrain is nosier that before.
As far as I know there is no pressurized oil in the intake manifold of a FORD 2.8L V6. The attachment bellow is in a FORD factory manual. I would PM Pintopower and pick his brain.
I know there is no pressureised oil in the intake.Like i said I think some sludge or gasket materal from changing the gasket is sticking or blocking the relief valve or oil passage. The repair manual that I have says to clean the relief valve , but does not say where it is.I assume its in the oil filter housing, but have not found any thing that says where it is.
In the book that I have says the relief valve is in the pump.So Ill have to replace the pump un less any one knows of a good product that I can put in to free it up.
I put in a quart of rislone to see if that helps.I am not confident though.I will more that likley have to put in an oil pump.Ill give the rislone a couple of days to soak , and if not any better then pull the pump.
ive been thinking about and wondering if the shaft that drives the pump might of pulled out and not seated all the way,Other than posible blockage or stuck relief valve that the only oil pressure related thing i touched.
Dave that would be you have oil pressure or you dont have any. Fred :)
yea i think your right Fred, just dreding pulling the pan to put in a new pump, but I may have to.One last thing I an going to do is pull the distributor again. When I first pulled it a clump of sludge from the outside of the enginge fell in the hole.I got some of it out, mabe some of it is blocking the oil passage there.I had great pressure before and mabe its partly blocked there. Ill clean the hole again and blow it out good and hope for the best.
I just pulled the dist and this time the shaft for the oil pump was stuck to it and came out.Ill try putting it back in. Does any one know if it needs the flex washer on it.iam sure its in the the oil pan now
Back together no change , looks like ill be droping the oil pan and put in a new pump unless any one else has any other ideas.
Dave have 1 more pull oil press. send unit start engine then right away shut off to flush passage clean send unit reinstall start eng. see then. Fred
Yesterday i ordered a new oil pump.Today the wife was visiting with old friends so i thought id drop the pan .Here is what I found.Lots of crap in the bottom of the pan and in the pick up screen.Looks like I found the problem! The pump will be in Thursday and then ill put it back together. Also the pan was dented in so the pick up was right at the very bottom , where at the suuff was.It was not to bad at all to take apart about 2 1/2 hours. The pan gasket was leaking any way so it not such a bad thein to do.
Yuk! Question, what is all that crap and where did it come from??
probialy some from changing the intake some from years of sitting.Like I said the pan was also dented in at the botton so the screen was at or near the very bottom of the pan.
got the car back together ladt night by 1 am! Idled it last night and no light.Lifters still a little noisey, but mabe oil hasent worked its way through yet. I need to take it for a run today for a further test.
Back to square one. Its no better.Still noisey still low oil pressure with new pump and clean oil pan and screen.Any ideas ????
I have found, in small block v-8 Fords at least, a low oil pressure at idle is most often worn cam bearings. I always replace the cam bearings when freshening up a old motor.
I talked to a good friend that works on a lot of Fords and he said it was most likley the main/rod bearings. I have located the bearings. Now I just have to pull the pan off again to see if they are bad.I should of checked them when I had the pan off eariler this week, but I though I found my problem with the dirty screen.
I'll stick my neck out and pass on a little info. If you have a FRAM filter on it you may want to put a quality brand on. I prefer Wix or Purolator. On certain engines a Fram will kill pressure at idle due to internal restriction and the bypass. I have had PH8A's on my 460's restrict oil pressure at idle as well as other engines. If you have a Fram on it, try changing it. Not a whole lot to lose at this point.
It has a wix filter on it now and put in 10 40 oil as advised by a friend and no change.I am in process of dropping the pan again to look at the rod and main bearings.
got the pan down again.I pulled one main , it looks good, but the rods are for sure loose.I pulled two and both were down to the copper.Ill get a set of rod bearings tomorrow and see what happens.
Got the rod bearings in and oil pressure is better though not where it should be .The upper end is still a bit noisey. I think ill baby it for the rest of the summer , and this winter pull the engine and do a complete rebuild.

flash041 I would greatly appreciate it if when you do the rebuild you document it as well as you have the process that you have gone threw in this thread.
Just curious, what lbs/foot did you tighten the rod caps down to?
thanks
the spec in 25lb.i was using an extension so i bumped it to 30
Dave if you use straight extension the torque stays the same. Fred
I put a gauge on to get readings. They are, 10 psi in drive at idol 800 rpm. 35 psi at 3000 rpm and above 20 psi at 2000 rpm. The specs i got say 40 - 60 psi at 2000 rpm.Appears that my oil pressure is 1/2 what it should be.The last thing I was going to check the housing where the oil filter screws on to see if its partly plugged.Looks like ill have to take the exhaust manifold off to get to it.
I had a V6 with low oil pressure too. I replaced the pump with the engine still in the car (I wouldnt do that again!) and it didnt help a bit. Thinking it was cam bearings, I sold the car.
I vote cam bearings. Fred :)
I am sure they are worn too fred.Today i plastigaged the crank bearings. Not good. The two mains I checked were .002 and .003. the max being .0015.The rods were worse, even with the new bearings.it hardly even crushed the gage.So I think ill put it back together , put 20 50 oil in it and then pull it out for a complete rebuild this winter. It MUST be ready for the Stampede next year!
