would this work? if so, what would be involved to do the swap.
Which engine are you using?
Russ
arent aod trannys computer controlled? I cant really remember.
But if they are it would work but you would have to wire it up and run an ecu and if your gunna go that far into it you miswell put a FI 5.0 HO infront of it too.
AOD-E is the computer controlled ones. you find those in later model mustangs i think 85+ I'm not 100% on that tho. We put an AOD trans in my moms old Pinto. we pulled it from a 83 Bronco.
You can use a Ford A4LD transmission behind a 2.3 which will give you overdrive. The only control it has as far any computer control is the lockup function for the converter. My 1988 Mustang had one in it when I bought the car. The person I bought it from had changed the tranny due to the original not working correctly. He installed another tranny with the same results. The car had sat for 2 years when I bought it. I trailered it home and proceeded to find the issue. I found that the torque converter was locking up as soon as the accelorator was pushed which would stall the engine. It took me a while to figure it out but it was the ecm. I disconnected the 2 wire plug that controls that function and away it went. It worked fine and at speed the rpm's were about 2500 or so at about 70 to 75 mph. The lockup would had dropped the rpm about 200 or so which helps with gas mileage. I pulled the tranny and did the T5 swap on it. The tranny quit going into 4th is why I pulled it but come to find out the band adjuster had come loose which stopped 4th from working. I wish I had left it in. Anyways...an A4LD tranny will give you a 4th gear and some better gas mileage. You could actually wire in a switch to activate it. Any questions PM me. Hope this sheds a little light on the subject
im running the 2.3, the aod is not computer controlled, the aode is. my question is will the bolt pattern line up with the 2.3 and the aod
I think where you are causing some confusion is that Ford makes several Automatic transmissions with overdrive, the name 'AOD' refers to a specific transmission that I believe was derived from the C-4. AFAIK the smallest engine it was used on was a 3.8L V-6, (the wifes t-bird has one) and I don't think it will bolt to a 2.3. The a4ld trans was derived from the c-3, and was used on 2.3 mustangs, rangers, Turbo coupes etc and also behind 4.0L Explorers. In later years the a4ld was beefed up, and later made fully electronic and added a 5th gear and became the 5r55e (I think)
I have a a4ld that I was going to try to get into a Pinto, but I lost interest in the project. Its a few inches longer than a c-3.
I hope this helps some.
